After just barely graduating high school, Gino worked the graveyard shifts at a gas station where he spent numerous nights pondering what he wanted to do with his life. Then one day on a frigid mountain peak he found it. After catching a glimpse of the ring nebula through a telescope at a star party, he returned to graveyard shifts with a newfound fire in his gut and spent his nights reading books on astrophysics. Eventually, Gino decided to go back to school at his local community college, and after much hard work, is now working on his PhD in physics at the University of Oregon.
MariAnna is a third year Lane Community College student pursuing a degree in marine biology, with a focus on education and outreach, and is minoring in chemistry. She is currently enrolled in the Dual Partnership Program with Oregon State University, and is attending classes at both institutions before transferring to OSU full time next year. She is a Course Embedded Tutor for the marine biology program at LCC, a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Fraternity, and is a member of the Research and Learning Opportunities committee with the Ocean11 club at OSU.
Jonathan Lambert is a junior at the University of Oregon, majoring in Archaeology. Jonathan was previously a student at Lane Community College, where he was able to participate in many interesting research projects.
Cailean 'Dakota' MacColl (she/they) attended LCC and completed the Honors Program before transferring to the UO in Winter of 2015. During her time at UO, she completed a BS in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, completed a BA in Comparative Literature, participated in Ethnobotany research in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, and worked at the student wellness center to promote public health initiatives. She is currently in the process of applying for medical schools with the hope of increasing Indigenous representation and serving historically marginalized and underserved communities.
Born and raised in Eugene, Lucas graduated from SEHS IHS in 2011. He explored his interests at LCC before graduating in 2017 with AAOT and plan to attend OSU. Lucas transferred in fall 2019 to the OSU College of Agricultural Sciences to study Crop and Soil Science with an emphasis in Soils, and will graduate in June 2021. Lucas is an alumni of OSU's CAS STEM Leaders program, and an active member of the CAS Leadership Academy.
Opal Otenburg is a lab technician and a recent Oregon State University graduate with a B.S. in Ocean Sciences. Opal began her undergraduate research experience through a bridge program connecting Linn-Benton Community College to Oregon State University.
Shana Weiland is Oregon resident as of 2015, having moved from Denver, Colorado to reorient his professional life. After a career in IT, Shana decided it was time to seek greater personal fulfillment from his work life. He started at LCC as a pre-veterinary medicine student, and after realizing his love of psychology and the available options in the OSU college of agriculture, Shana decided to pursue his BS in animal behavior instead of an MD in veterinary medicine.
