HST101 - Western Civilization: Ancient Mediterranean

Hello Students,

My name is Joe Escobar and I will be teaching one ONLINE section of HST101 Western Civilization, Fall Term at Lane Community College. I've been a history instructor since 1989, and you will find that I enjoy teaching and working with students.  I’m using this web page to give prospective students some information relevant to this particular course. 

The course is a completely online class.  If the class is currently full, you MUST add yourself to the official MyLane waitlist.  Students will be added to the course in the order they are listed on the waitlist.  

IMPORTANT: If you want to look at the syllabus, you don't have to wait and wonder what is required. CLICK HERE and make an informed decision about whether or not you should enroll in this class. 

We will use Moodle and the textbook publisher website MindTap extensively to accomplish our work for this course.  Once registered, you will be able to login to the Moodle site with your L# and MyLane passphrase. The site URL is:

Second, once logged in, I hope you take the time to read and/or print a copy of the course syllabus, as well as all of the other relevant links. 

Third, think about this.  You are spending over $400 to take this course, and most of you know nothing about this "Instructor Joe Escobar" listed in the schedule of classes.  If you fail to drop the course before the end of the first week of class, you will not receive a tuition refund.  To help you decide if you are spending your tuition money wisely, I have posted my instructor and course evaluations completed by my former students over the last several years.  All comments, positive and negative, have been included.  I would strongly advise that you take a look and see if you like what you discover about this class and your potential instructor.  That URL is:

The Titan Bookstore normally charges $122.75 for the required materials for this course.  However, since this course uses the Inclusive Access option, the price drops to $86.25.  This price is lower than purchasing the materials directly from the textbook publisher. ($92)

This course requires both eBook and publisher website access, so students CANNOT purchase a used textbook or "ebook only" cheaper option.  Neither of these will provide the publisher website access that is required to complete and turn in your assignments for this online course.
