Objectives
Background and Context
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technologies are rapidly evolving, offering both opportunities and challenges. The release of ChatGPT just last year has led to the growing realization that the rapid proliferation of AI will impact higher education. To navigate this evolving landscape, Lane Community College is establishing a Presidential Task Force to comprehensively examine the opportunities and challenges posed by AI, as well as to provide observations and recommendations for the campus community to consider as it examines its relationship with AI.
Objectives
The primary objective of the President’s Task Force on AI is to explore the multifaceted implications of AI in the specific context of a community college with a wide group of campus stakeholders. Providing opportunities for collaborative and open discussions are key. In this work, the Task Force will consider the question of “How can Lane Community College effectively respond to and integrate AI into our College to support and enhance the student experience?”
The Taskforce will engage in exploration and discussion of the following topics in relation to AI:
Intentional incorporation of AI in the classroom.
Safeguarding academic integrity.
Keeping data secure in light of new technologies.
Addressing pedagogy and student assessment.
Exploring new academic programming and fields of study that include AI technologies.
Keeping abreast of developments of AI and responses of other community colleges and higher education institutions, including accrediting bodies, or in other words, develop an expertise in the area of AI.
Ensuring and promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in this new technological landscape and specifically utilizing Lane’s Equity Lens in all deliberations.
Scope of Work
The Taskforce will undertake the following key activities:
Host meetings and roundtable discussions inclusive of the entire LCC community across multiple stakeholder groups (managers, faculty, staff, and students) that include the following:
Educating the LCC community about AI, what it is, and what are its implications
Providing opportunities for the campus community to share concerns and ideas on how our community should respond to this new technology
Author a report that incorporates the following:
For each of the seven topics above, provide a summary of the themes that emerged from the meetings and discussions held with the campus community.
A discussion of best practices in responding to AI within the context of a community college, specifically, and higher education more broadly.
A section with up to ten recommendations for Lane Community College to consider in its response to AI.
Timeline
The Task Force will meet during the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 Academic Years, during which members will inform themselves of best practices and trends in AI, gather input from relevant stakeholders, and report its findings and recommendations. The Task Force will send quarterly updates to the President’s Office in the fall and winter terms, and an annual report is due no later than the commencement of each spring term.
Composition
Co-Chairs: Shelley Tinkham, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Kevin Steeves, Instructional Designer and Co-Chair of the Faculty Council.
Task Force with equal members of faculty, staff, managers, and students, not to exceed 20 members. It is expected that the Task Force will consider itself a representative body of the entire campus, expanding beyond the individual viewpoints of its members, and will engage with a multitude of campus stakeholders. The Task Force will be populated by November 1, 2023 and its first convening will take place no later than December 1, 2023.
