In fifth grade, feeling excluded because of her ethnicity, the narrator longed to be Dorothy in a school play but was told she couldn't because Dorothy wasn't Chinese. This experience led her to embrace her heritage, eventually becoming a successful children's book author who creates stories featuring Asian characters, highlighting the importance of both mirrors (representation) and windows (diverse perspectives) in children's literature to foster self-worth and empathy.
The goals of this teaching guide are threefold: 1) to discuss the importance of inclusivity in the classroom, 2) to present examples of teaching more inclusively, and 3) to provide additional resources for further guidance.
No single teaching approach will engage each student at once, but building a strategy to deliver culturally responsive teaching lessons consistently will help you appeal to diverse learners with distinct backgrounds.
