Class overview
Computer Technology provides foundational knowledge in the areas of computer hardware, operating systems, networking, and troubleshooting for secondary students. This course integrates academic and technical preparation and focuses on career awareness, career exploration, and skill preparation in the information technologies trade. This pathway emphasizes the processes in which computers are built, run, and interact with their environment. The units of this course are sequential in nature, competency-based, and prepare students for certification within the field of information technology.
When looking to purchase a new computer there so many things to know and consider that it can be a bit overwhelming. The following is a list of things to consider when looking to purchase a new computer.
Purpose: Determine if you'll use it for basic tasks (browsing, office work), intensive applications (video editing, gaming), or specialized work (programming, 3-D modeling, game development).
Performance: Look at the processor (CPU), RAM, and storage. For general use, an Intel i5 (Core 5) or AMD Ryzen 5 with 16GB RAM is sufficient. For demanding tasks, consider an i7/i9 (Core 7 or 9) or Ryzen 7/9 with 24GB+ RAM.
Storage: SSDs offer faster speeds than traditional HDDs. A 256GB SSD is a good start, with additional HDD storage if needed.
Graphics: Integrated graphics work for everyday tasks. For gaming, 3D modeling, or video editing, a dedicated GPU (like NVIDIA GeForce or AMD Radeon) is essential.
Portability: Choose a laptop for mobility or a desktop for better performance and upgradability.
Battery Life (for laptops): Consider battery longevity if you’ll be away from power sources often.
Display: A high-resolution screen (Full HD or 4K) enhances clarity, especially for design work.
Budget: Balance cost with features. Prioritize components that impact performance based on your tasks.
Future-Proofing: Opt for upgradable systems to extend the computer’s lifespan.
Operating System: Decide between Windows, macOS, or Linux, depending on your software needs and preferences.
