Arco della Pace

The Arco della Pace (Arch of Peace) is a triumphal arch, which was initially built in the early nineteenth century as part of the 'Foro Bonaparte', a modern version of a Roman Forum, to celebrate Napoleon's victories. The banishment of the emperor in 1814 brought a premature end to the construction of this forum, and the arch is one of only two completed structures.

Today the Arco della Pace stands at the centre of a pedestrian area at the edge of the Parco Sempione (Sempione Park).

Here is a fun fact about the horses at the top of the Arch: originally they faced towards France, but they were later turned around by the Austrians in order to show France their backsides. As a result of this, the horses now stare at the Milan city centre.
