Nutrition and Wellness
Sports & Exercise Science is a two-year program designed to introduce students to careers in sports science & sports medicine. Through various hands-on activities and lab practicals, students will learn about proper technique for weightlifting & resistance training, athletic taping/wrapping procedures, rehabilitative exercise & intervention, functional & sport-specific movement assessments, and cardiovascular fitness testing protocols. Upon completion, students will earn three college credits for each first-year course and obtain a certification in First Aid/CPR. This program is intended for students who are interested in furthering their education in sports science/sports medicine. Admission into this program is highly competitive.
In year two, students will apply their training and skills learned in year one through work-based learning opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to design programs and assess clients/athletes through the Lakewood High School Strength & Conditioning department. In addition, students will complete internships and clinical observation hours with local sports medicine/exercise science professionals who are currently practitioners in the field. An emphasis will also be placed on preparing students to sit for the National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Training exam and the AMCA Physical Therapist Technician/Aide exam.
College Credit: Students have the opportunity to earn college credit, upon completion of career-tech coursework and/or industry-recognized credentials, provided all program and grade requirements are met - at no cost to the students and families.
Weighted Grading: CTAG aligned courses follow the same weighted grading scale as AP and CCP courses.
Industry-Recognized Credentials: CPR, First Aid, Bleeding Control, National Academy of Sports Medicine Certified Personal Trainer (NASM-CPT), OSHA-10
Work-Based Learning: Juniors participate in simulated work activities, within their career tech program, gaining real-world experience in their chosen field. Seniors in good standing (strong grades, good attendance, professional skills, and on track to graduate) will be eligible to participate in an internship or job site placement aligned with their course of study, in lieu of attending their career-tech program. Approval from the WS Work-Based Learning (WBL) Specialist and Coordinator are required.
Pre-Apprenticeship: Students participate to build workforce readiness skills and earn a 12-point, industry-recognized credential.
West Shore Career-Tech programs support student graduation requirements through Career Readiness Options and/or the Industry-Recognized Credential Seal.
