Counting Money Practice Ideas
Counting Money Practice Ideas
Students in 2nd grade should be able to count a variety of coins up to at least $1.00. They should also be able to provide the correct coins for a given amount. Quarters tend to be a bit trickier mixed in with other coins and typically require the most practice. Here are a few ideas to support practicing at home.
Basic Practice Ideas:
Provide a handful of coins. Create amounts for your child to count, then ask your child to show you a given amount. Provide a variety of coin combinations up to $1.00
When shopping, look at the cent part of the price and ask your child what coins they would use to pay that amount.
Random practice - in the car, on a walk, while making dinner.

Materials Needed:
Dish of Coins (A good amount would include: 7 quarters, 10 nickels, 7 dimes, 10-12 pennies)
Either 6 slips of paper, 6 popsicle sticks, or 1 blank dice labeled with the following:
1 cent
5 cents
10 cents
25 cents
Skip a Turn
Pay 10 cents
Directions
Player 1 picks a paper / stick / rolls dice
Collect the amount rolled from the dish
If "Pay 10 cents" is drawn - player pays 10 cents. If the player does not have 10 cents, the player should pay as much as they have up to that amount.
Player 2 takes their turn, and so on.
During any turn, a player may exchange coins for an equal amount. This may be required to keep playing.
First player to reach at least $1.00 wins.
Create a memory game by writing a money amount on 6 index cards. On the other 6 index cards, draw coins with the matching amounts. (A circle with the initial of the coin's name is how we show coins in class when needed.) Play memory. In place of drawing the coins, you could also place actual coins under an index card.
Turn regular board games into math practice. Create a set of index cards with amounts of money written on them. Before taking a turn in a board game, each player must draw a money card, then make that amount of money with provided coins.
Materials Needed: Coins, a set of index cards with money amounts written on them, a set of 20 popsicle sticks (number can vary), and a cup.
Label 5 of the 20 sticks with the word snap on one end. Leave the others blank. Mix the sticks up and put them in the cup with the word side down.
Create a set of index cards with amounts of money written on them.
Each player takes turns drawing a money card and creating that amount with coins. If it is correct, the player draws a stick from the cup.
If the stick is blank, the player keeps it.
If the stick says "SNAP" the player puts all of their sticks back into the cup.
You can either play a set number of rounds, or set a timer. When the timer goes off, finish the round.
The player with the most number of sticks in the end wins.
