ACP is intended to equip students and their families with the tools necessary to make more informed choices about postsecondary education and training as it leads to careers.
It is part of DPI's overall vision for every student to graduate high school college and career ready. That means students must be competent both socially and emotionally. We want our students to be strong critical thinkers, collaborate and solve real-world problems, and persevere when things aren’t quite going their way. When put together, it’s about making them productive adults with satisfying careers.
At the High School level there is a focus on Career Planning and Preparation (PLAN & GO). Students at LUHS will provided with the following ACP activities throughout 9-12th grade.
● Conducting career research to identify personal preferences in relation to specific occupations.
● School-supervised, career- and work-based learning experiences.
● Instruction in career decision making.
● Instruction that provides:
○ for the practical application of academic skills
○ applied technologies
○ economics, including entrepreneurship education and personal financial literacy
● Pupil access to career and technical education programs, including programs at technical colleges.
● Pupil access to accurate national, regional, and state labor market information, including labor market supply and demand.
● Instruction and experience in developing and refining the skills and behaviors needed by pupils to obtain and retain employment.
Academic and Career Planning is delivered by our counselors, teachers, and other staff by utilizing Xello software in grades 9-12. The ACP support at LUHS incorporates:
Career and technical education provided in the school district
Courses that provide dual credit through Nicolet College or other higher ed. institution upon graduation from high school
College preparation via Advanced Placement courses
Youth apprenticeship or other job training and work experience
Instruction in skills related to employment
Our ACP Committee meets on an annual basis to assess the needs of our students and community. Based on these needs we will initiate the appropriate professional development opportunities for our staff in order to best serve and support our students.
LUHS families are invited to participate in academic and career planning throughout the school year via the following events:
Annually informing parents about what academic and career planning services their child receives.
Providing parents with multiple opportunities during each school year to participate in their child's academic and career planning.
Updating parents throughout the school year on the progress of their child's academic and career planning.
LUHS has partnered with a variety of stakeholders in order to provide the most beneficial experience across our ACP content. Thank you to all of our partners and volunteer committee members:
Minocqua Chamber of Commerce
The LUHS School District supports students in academic and career planning through:
Student participation in programming
ACP/school counseling services
Access to a formal process for connecting students to teachers and other school staff for assistance with the development and implementation of each student's academic and career plan.
All students within LUHS are provided the opportunity for individualized ACP support. School counselors and homeroom advisors provide the time and resources for students.
Any student with a disability is supported through the academic and career planning process by our LUHS staff. Student barriers are taken into account when developing all ACP-related curriculum.
Labor Market Information (LMI) can help students understand which jobs are most likely to be available and well-compensated. WisConomy is the hub for WI employment data and offers a variety of tools to search and learn about the most up-to-date job market.
Skill Explorer is another site with data generated from the WI Department of Workforce that allows students to explore careers by projected job growth, average annual openings and average salaries.
Wisconsin State Statute 115.28(59) requires that school districts be provided computer software to be used statewide to provide academic and career planning (ACP) services to students in grades 6 to 12. Xello is a free, online career exploration tool available to all LUHS students via their school account. Students can use this software to take career-related assessments, explore online career and college profiles, and get information about financial aid and employment.
As part of our strategic plan, the district is focusing on developing and implementing equitable instructional practices that focus on the individual needs of our students so they are prepared for any post secondary path they choose.
