What Can I Use Smart Futures for in the Classroom?
Smart Futures has a multitude of activities at all grade levels, and you are strongly encouraged to explore them. All teachers have access to Smart Futures through clever.com. Once logged in, you can view a teacher dashboard, and can log in as a student to experience the platform and activities just as they would. Please feel free to explore it, and implement the activities into your classrooms! Students have certain requirements each year, but completing the activities multiple times only benefits them.
Teachers should be able to create their own class through the platform, and assign students to it. If you are unable to, please let one of the counselors know, and we can take care of that for you!
You can follow the link below to access all of the lesson plans associated with Smart Futures. These are free to us, and can be adapted as you see fit.
How Do I Access Smart Futures?
Go to Clever.com.
If you haven't already, find Lakeland Jr./Sr. High School, and connect using your Lakeland email address.
Click on the Smart Futures icon.
Teachers will have an option of logging in as a user (student) or teacher. The option to log in as a user gives teachers the opportunity to experience Smart Futures as a student. Once a teacher logs in as a student once, they can easily flip between a user and teacher account from within Smart Futures.
How to Monitor Student Progress in Smart Futures
7th & 8th Grade Specific Information
Students in 7th & 8th grade will complete their Smart Futures activities through their TRIBE/SEL time. Teachers can navigate to the 7th Grade & 8th Grade pages to see what courses each grade is responsible to complete. The second topic on each of those pages titled "What Are All These Activities About" links to lesson plans for each activity that have been provided by Smart Futures. Teachers can follow those if they wish to during that time.
All activities should be completed by the end of the 3rd Quarter with the exception of Activities 5, 6, 7, and 12. Those four activities should be completed prior to the end of the 1st Quarter. Grading for each activity can be done at the discretion of each teacher.
All 7th & 8th grade core teachers have access to Smart Futures, and have been assigned to a "class" that will allow them to monitor student activity completion. More information about logging in and monitoring students can be found above. If there are any additional questions, please feel free to reach out to the counseling department.
Uploading An Artifact to Smart Futures
Throughout high school, students will do more career preparation than just what is done through Smart Futures, and much of that occurs through activities in the classroom. These activities generally yield artifacts. An artifact is something that proves students completed some sort of growth, and includes some sort of reflection about the experience. Artifacts are not considered complete unless a written reflection is completed as well!
Artifacts must show that students have gained meaningful instruction in one of the four areas of the PA Career Education and Work (CEW) Standards. A full breakdown can be found through the link below, but the four areas are:
Career Awareness and Preparation
Career Acquisition (Getting a Job)
Career Retention and Advancement
Entrepreneurship
We ask that anytime you do things with your students that may merit a career development related artifact, please have them upload it to Smart Futures. If you aren't sure whether or not something should be considered an artifact, please ask one of the counselors. We are happy to help!
On Smart Futures, artifacts can be uploaded in the following categories:
Career-Pathway Experiences (Career Fair, College Fair, Campus Visit, Job Shadow, etc.)
Career Acquisition Documents (Résumé, Letter of Recommendation, etc.)
Future Ready Skills
Uploaded Artifacts (unrelated to any above category)
Art & Media (School Projects, Hobbies, etc.)
Honors and Awards (Academic or otherwise)
Test Score (PSAT, SAT, Keystone, etc.)
Extracurricular (Athletics, Clubs, etc.)
Work Experience
Community Service
School Work
