Pre-Algebra (8th grade) overview
Idaho eighth-grade mathematics standards emphasize foundational algebraic thinking, preparing students for Algebra 1. The curriculum focuses on six primary areas: linear relationships, functions, equations, scientific notation, real numbers, and geometry (specifically the Pythagorean Theorem).
Key instructional topics include:
Number Systems: Extending numbers to include irrational numbers and using scientific notation for very large or small quantities.
Linear Equations: Solving multi-step linear equations, inequalities, and systems of linear equations using graphing, substitution, and elimination.
Functions: Understanding the concept of a function, determining slope, and writing equations in slope-intercept form (y = mx + b).
Geometry: Applying the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances, determining triangle validity, and analyzing two-dimensional figures through transformations like dilation and congruence.
