Across Grade Levels

In-class Basic Skills Program:

At each grade level, focus is placed on different basic skills sets. While understanding that all students have unique needs in literacy skills, attention is given to those skills necessary to succeed at each specific grade level. I work closely with the general education teachers at each grade level to align my in-class support with their specific lessons. Often, whole class review will be done on new concepts introduced in a particular lesson. All students benefit from the review and additional practice of reading and writing skills. Below is a general guideline:

Kindergarten: recognizing letters and letter sounds, sounding out beginning and ending sounds of words, writing letters, writing sight words.

1st grade: Writing complete sentences that begin with capital letters and end in punctuation, sounding out words, identifying nouns, verbs, adjectives. Understanding sentence structure, utilizing tools such as graphic organizers to aid in the writing process.

2nd grade: Writing complete sentences, using punctuation, sounding out words, writing short paragraphs, adding descriptive words, utilizing tools such as graphic organizers to aid in the writing process.

3rd grade: Writing sentences of different lengths, adding descriptive words, sounding out words, writing topic sentences, writing short paragraphs, utilizing tools such as graphic organizers to aid in the writing process.

4th grade: Understanding the structure of writing longer pieces, writing multiple paragraphs, topic sentences, utilizing tools such as graphic organizers to aid in the writing process, including and punctuating dialogue, increasing reading and writing stamina, revision and editing.

5th grade: Writing longer pieces, writing multiple paragraphs, identifying parts of a story (plot, conflict, resolution, etc.), utilizing tools such as graphic organizers to aid in the writing process, revision, editing, increasing reading and writing stamina.

Middle School 6th, 7th,8th: increasing reading and writing stamina, formatting longer writing pieces, revision, editing, identifying parts of a story, academic writing (essays and responses), citing resources.

Lakehurst Elementary School also offers an extended school day program for students qualifying for basic skills assistance. This twice-a-week program focuses on specific grade level skills, and allows students to practice those literacy skills that they are working on during their regular school day.
