Hello, Eagle parents and students! My name is Ms. Bailey, and I am so excited to be your sixth grade English Language Arts instructor for the 2024-2025 school year. I am passionate and dedicated to ensuring that our students receive an enriching education. Here is some background information about me; I attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for my undergraduate years. From there, I received a degree in Creative Writing. After earning my bachelor's degree, I attended Xavier University for graduate school. At Xavier, I was apart of the Norman C. Francis Teacher's Residency Program in which I graduated with a Master's of Art and Teaching in Middle School Education.
The lessons that students will engage in for ELA will build upon their prior knowledge of concepts learned in previous English classes. The standards that the lessons derived from will focus on enhancing students' reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language skills. Daily class meetings will allow students to develop their speaking and listening skills as they share their thoughts and engage with classmates. Throughout the year, students will interact with both literary and informational texts. Each text will have students learning how to identify key ideas and details, analyze the craft and structure of the writings, and integrating their knowledge and ideas into further examining the literary or informational piece. Students will also gain a higher understanding of the conventions of standard English, sentence structure, and vocabulary acquisition, and usage. Each unit will have students apply what they have learned by completing a writing task. Students will learn how to plan out and effectively produce three types of essays: a narrative, a research paper, and a literary analysis.
