Some general homework-related things to note for the 2025-2026 school year:
*Homework will consist of a monthly choice board and will run Friday to Friday. I'll read with each child weekly as a check-in to ensure the books are helpful to them.
*Homework bags should be returned each day (even if they're empty), but homework choice board related work can be passed in weekly. Readers will be sent home on Fridays each week so please make sure homework bags and readers come back to school the following Friday. Once students have surpassed L reading level, they are asked to read from their own good fit books at home, continuing to develop comprehension and fluency skills through oral reading practice.
*Reading nightly is a must-do. However, the options on the monthly homework choice boards will be optional--the items listed are there for you to make use of if you feel your child needs it and of course if your child has the interest and stamina on weekday evenings/during the weekend to give it their best. My hope of course is that there's something there for everyone and that you can all find whatever homework balance works for your family each evening/week. Dice will be sent home to be kept for the year and any login info they'll need will be taped inside their homework folders. Other game pieces that get sent home will need to be returned with completed homework.
*Homework should be completed in pencil unless otherwise stated in the homework activity.

*these prompts will be introduced in class during our class read aloud time and eventually will be put into student book boxes to be referred to regularly during our Daily 5 time. You can make use of the questions at home as a way to discuss the books they're reading or listening to being read to them and build their comprehension skills bit by bit. Talking about what they're reading in these specific kinds of ways takes practice and this will help guide them.*
*these prompts will be introduced during our Language Arts time throughout the year. They will later be put into student book boxes to be referred to as needed during our Daily 5 time as a way to decode unknown words when they're Reading to Self or Reading to Someone. You can make use of these prompts at home as a way to make the strategies consistent for your child. Repeated reading of familar texts is a proven way to help children develop comfort with appropriate volume, expression and pace when reading aloud.*
