Students in 8th-12th grade have the opportunity to be in the marching band. Required for all high school band students, the Marching Bulldogs is a competitive marching band that rehearses, performs, and competes each fall. Field performances include all home varsity football games, the Algona Band Day Field Competition, the IHSMA State Marching Band Festival, and the Indoor Show. Street performances include the North Iowa Band Festival Parade, the Scarville Independence Day Parade, and the July Jubilee Parade.
"The Lake Mills High School Marching Band has a rich tradition in the marching activity, performing competitively for over 40 years. The band program has earned several 1st place trophies and Division I "Superior" ratings throughout the years at the Algona Band Day Competition and State Marching Band Festival. 2023 marked the 11th consecutive and 31st total Division I rating."
"In addition to field marching in the fall, the Lake Mills Marching Band performs at several parades during the spring and summer. They competed May 2023 at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City, where they took first place in class 2A, making 18 consecutive first place awards at that competition. The Lake Mills Band also earned the "Meredith Wilson" Grand Champion Award for the 8th consecutive year!"
Students in seventh and eighth grade have the opportunity to be in the concert band. The concert band perform at several concerts throughout the year. These include the Christmas Concert, the Parade of Bands Concert, and the Spring Concert. Students also have the opportunity to travel to Adventureland Park in May, where students perform a short concert and then enjoy several hours in the park.
Students prepare and perform a solo or duet/trio for the Solo/Ensemble Night in March. Students will select their piece in December, and perform for a judge in March. Students can receive a Division I Superior or Division II Excellent Rating,
Students have the opportunity to partake in two honor bands throughout the year. These honor bands are the NCIBA Middle School Honor Band in November and the Karl King Middle School Honor Band in January. Interested students will fill out a form at the beginning of the year, and will be nominated for eligible honor bands. As selection is decided by non-LM personnel, acceptance is not guaranteed.
