Module 6
Dear Parents / Carers,
As we reach the end of a remarkably successful academic year—our first as Leigh Academy Hugh Christie—I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. This year has brought many positive changes and continued growth across our school community, and I am incredibly proud of the progress we have made together.
Our small school model continues to be one of our greatest strengths. The sense of belonging, high-quality pastoral care, and strong relationships across the academy have contributed to a nurturing environment where students feel supported and valued. Our Disruption-Free Learning (DFL) approach is now deeply embedded in our culture, with 8 out of 10 behaviour logs being positive—a testament to our students' maturity, engagement, and pride in their learning.
We have made significant strides in our digital curriculum. With Chromebooks now fully embedded, students have greater access to learning both in and out of the classroom. Attendance has improved at a much faster rate than the national average and, for the first time in our school’s history, has reached national average levels. This improvement is particularly strong for our SEND students, who have benefited from a complete restructuring of our provision, a fully inclusive environment, and tailored digital access and support.
Our MYP (Middle Years Programme) curriculum continues to offer a broad and balanced education. One of the highlights of the year was our first Year 9 Graduation—a milestone that marked students’ achievements and their transition into the next phase of their academic journey.
Beyond the classroom, we are proud of the rich experiences offered this year. Over 30 clubs ran during break, lunch, and after school, and students participated in more than 30 trips and visits, ranging from local enrichment outings to residential experiences—further deepening their learning and personal development.
Each year group has had its own successes:
Year 7 settled in quickly and showed great enthusiasm in embracing secondary school life.
Year 8 matured well, becoming more confident and independent learners.
Year 9 celebrated a fantastic graduation and have grown into excellent role models for the younger years.
Year 10 began their GCSE journey with real focus and determination.
Year 11 approached their exams with resilience—we now look forward to celebrating their results in August.
Year 12 made a strong start to Sixth Form, and we are excited to support them into their final year.
Year 13 completed their final assessments, and we wish them every success as they take their next steps into higher education, training, or employment.
As we await the summer results, I want to thank our dedicated staff and hard-working students for their exceptional effort and commitment throughout the year. We are also proud of our recent Challenge Partner review, which affirmed our many strengths and confirmed we are on the right path. We remain committed to growing from strength to strength—always putting student wellbeing and academic progress at the heart of everything we do.
Looking ahead, we are announcing a leadership change in our Inclusion Team. A heartfelt thank you to Miss Underwood for her dedication and impact; she leaves us to take on a Deputy Principal role at another academy, and we wish her every success. We are delighted to welcome Mrs Laura-Jayne Moll as our new Assistant Principal for Inclusion. Mrs Moll is a highly experienced and successful SENCO, known for driving engagement and outcomes for SEND learners, and is already working closely with us to ensure a seamless and excellent start in September.
Finally, we look forward to welcoming our students back in September—Year 7 and Year 12 will return on Monday, 1st September, with all other year groups joining us on Tuesday, 2nd September.
Thank you once again for your continued trust and support. Wishing you and your families a safe, restful, and enjoyable summer break.
Best regards,
Mr Palak Shah

Every student who took part brought unmatched effort, determination, and pride to the pitch and court. They demonstrated not only their athletic ability but also what it means to be a true team player — encouraging one another, staying motivated under pressure, and competing with respect.

Seb (Year 10) created deliciously golden loaded potato skins, packed with flavour and brilliantly presented.
Our talented Year 8 students took on the challenge of designing and decorating their own cheesecakes:
Vanilla Cheesecake with strawberries and crushed biscuits
Oreo Cheesecake with a beautifully balanced chocolate topping
These dishes not only looked amazing but demonstrated fantastic planning, preparation, and presentation skills. Well done to Jacob, Seb, and all our brilliant Year 8 bakers for raising the bar in the kitchen—your efforts are truly worth celebrating!
Year 7 Textiles: Creativity Without Boarders
Our talented Year 7 students have been showcasing their imagination and design skills through their Cushion Project in Textiles this term!
Students began by selecting a country of interest and using it as inspiration to design the front of their cushion. After researching and collecting a variety of cultural images on their Chromebooks, they applied digital design skills to create a final layout. These designs were then sublimation printed and heat-pressed onto fabric—a fantastic introduction to textile technology!
To complete their cushions, students explored tie-dye techniques to decorate the back. From bold spirals to striking stripe effects, each student had the freedom to express their personal style.
This project not only developed practical making skills, but also encouraged global thinking, creativity, and independence. A huge well done to all involved—your cushions are a true celebration of colour, culture, and craftsmanship!

Year 9 MYP Graduation 2025
What a fantastic afternoon we had celebrating the achievements of our amazing Year 9 students at their MYP Graduation Ceremony! The event marked the culmination of hard work, growth, and discovery through the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), and it was a true celebration of the incredible journey our students have taken this year.
We were delighted to welcome families, staff, and members of our school community to share in the celebration as we recognised outstanding achievements across a wide range of areas:
Subject Excellence Awards – honouring dedication, progress, and excellence in every subject, from English to Design, PE to Languages.
IB Learner Profile Awards – spotlighting the students who best embody the 10 qualities we nurture in every MYP learner, including Thinker, Caring, Principled, Reflective, and Risk-taker.
Community Project Awards – recognising students who led impactful, meaningful action through their MYP Community Projects, from raising awareness to helping those in need.
Interdisciplinary Learning Awards – celebrating collaboration and critical thinking across subjects through our exciting IDU projects.
The atmosphere was one of pride, excitement, and inspiration as we looked back on the many achievements of our Year 9 cohort. From the creativity shown in presentations to the maturity displayed in their service and leadership, our students have shown what it truly means to be global-minded, compassionate, and curious learners.
A huge congratulations to every student—your commitment, character, and courage to grow have shone brightly throughout your MYP journey. This graduation marks just the beginning of your next chapter, and we can’t wait to see all that you go on to achieve in Key Stage 4 and beyond.
Keep striving, stay curious, and continue to be the change-makers we know you are!
At Leigh Academy Hugh Christie, personal development continues to thrive as students actively demonstrate key elements of the IB Learner Profile of Open-Mindedness.
Through a series of engaging assemblies and advisory activities, students have explored important themes such as Pride Month, healthy habits, and character development. These experiences have encouraged thoughtful reflection, empathy, and a broader understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Pride Month
As part of our commitment to fostering inclusivity and understanding, students at Leigh Academy Hugh Christie took part in an assembly focused on Pride Month. During the session, they learned about the origins and significance of Pride Month, why it is celebrated, and the importance of standing up for LGBTQ+ rights. The assembly also provided practical guidance on how to be a supportive ally, helping students to reflect on the values of respect, acceptance, and open-mindedness within our school community.
Financial Literacy
As part of My Money Week 2025, students at Leigh Academy Hugh Christie took part in an informative assembly highlighting the importance of financial literacy. The session explored how managing money effectively can have a significant impact on personal wellbeing and future opportunities. Students learned key principles of financial literacy, including budgeting, saving, and making informed financial choices. The assembly encouraged students to start thinking critically about their financial habits and empowered them with the knowledge to make responsible decisions in their daily lives.
The Impact and Influence of AI Technologies
Students engaged in the issue of the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our world. The session introduced students to the many benefits of AI, such as its role in healthcare, education, and everyday technology. At the same time, it explored the potential risks, including ethical concerns, job displacement, and data privacy. Importantly, students learned practical ways to stay safe when using AI-powered tools and platforms, promoting responsible and informed use of technology in their daily lives.
This module in PSHE, Year 7 students have been learning about mental health – what it is, how to talk about it, and how to look after it. We’ve been working hard to break down the stigma around mental health by learning to speak about our emotions honestly and supportively.
Students have explored:
What mental health really means and how it's just as important as physical health.
Ways to express their emotions clearly and how to support others who may be struggling.
The importance of exercise for both physical and mental health.
How to build self-confidence by recognising their own strengths and qualities.
How to spot and respond to bullying, and why kindness and respect matter.
We’ve also discussed practical strategies like mindfulness, talking to trusted adults, and taking screen breaks – all helping to build a positive foundation for mental wellbeing. We’re proud of the thoughtful discussions and maturity Year 7 have shown, and we encourage families to keep these conversations going at home.
Young Minds have a helpful guide for parents/carers on how to start and open up a discussion about their child's mental health, you can access it here.
In PSHRE this term, Year 12 have taken a deep dive into how democracy works in the UK. They’ve explored the structure of government, how laws are made, and the key roles of the House of Commons and House of Lords.
Students investigated different political parties, how elections work, and whether our current voting system is fair. They also looked at how pressure groups, campaigns and petitions can bring about change.
To put their learning into practice, students took part in a mock vote, comparing their own political priorities with the policies of real parties. It’s been a brilliant opportunity for them to become more informed, active citizens.
Raising Awareness of AI Deepfakes
We are committed to equipping our students and their families with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the rapidly changing digital world. As part of our focus on digital literacy and online safety, students have been learning about the growing presence and potential dangers of AI-generated deepfakes - highly realistic but entirely fabricated images, audio, or videos created using artificial intelligence. These deepfakes can be used to spread misinformation, manipulate opinions, or damage reputations, making it increasingly important for young people to develop critical thinking and digital discernment.
Through dedicated sessions, students have explored how to recognise the signs of a deepfake, the ethical implications of their creation and use, and the importance of verifying information from trusted sources. They have also been encouraged to consider the impact that sharing misleading content can have on individuals and communities. As this technology becomes more advanced and accessible, we are also encouraging parents and carers to engage in open conversations with their children about the responsible use of digital media. By working together, we can help students become more informed, cautious, and ethical digital citizens in an increasingly complex online environment.
Leigh Academy have published an informative guide that you can read here. Parents and carers can find out more from here, using the guide created by Internet Matters.

Creative Writing Accolades
We were thrilled to take part in the Book Creator Academy Trust Competition, where creativity and originality were on full display. A huge congratulations to our prize-winning students: Austin, Jorgie, and Elizabeth , whose work stood out among strong entries from across the Trust.
In addition, our Librarian has been working tirelessly to support young talent, and we’re proud to share that several of our students have been published in an anthology as part of the Young Writers’ competition. This recognition is a testament to the imagination and skill of our budding authors.
Students were inspired by the thought-provoking art installation by Colombian artist, Doris Salcedo.
Year 8 IB MYP Interdisciplinary Unit: Collaboration Across the Curriculum
This term, the English Department collaborated with the Arts subjects to deliver a powerful and thought-provoking interdisciplinary unit on the theme of refugees and the displaced. This project tied in with the Year 8 curriculum, encouraging students to explore this important global issue through literature, drama, and visual arts. The results were moving, insightful, and a brilliant example of how the humanities can work together to deepen understanding.
We are incredibly proud of everything our students have achieved this year and look forward to even more literary adventures in the year ahead!
Sparx Reader Success
Our students have reached an outstanding milestone through the Sparx Reader program. To date, they have read an incredible 35,984,402 words, spent over 5,970 hours reading carefully and thoughtfully, and successfully completed 3,758 books. Alongside this, they’ve answered more than 764,481 questions, demonstrating not only commitment but real comprehension and engagement. This is a phenomenal achievement that reflects the hard work and enthusiasm of our entire school community.

A fantastic example of determination paying off!
What’s Been Happening in Science?
Here’s a quick round-up of what students have been exploring:
Year 7 – Took part in an exciting interdisciplinary project on Historical Sustainability and investigated electricity in practical ways. A highlight was the fantastic pond dipping trip to Notcutts Garden Centre on May 21st—an immersive outdoor learning experience!
Year 8 – Delved into environmental chemistry and how we use and manage Earth’s resources responsibly.
Year 9 – Tackled the building blocks of matter through atomic structure and the periodic table.
Year 10 – Focused on preparation for their upcoming mock exams, applying knowledge through retrieval practice and targeted revision.
From scientific inquiry to real-world application, our students continue to impress us with their curiosity, commitment, and collaborative learning.
Keep an eye on the science labs—there’s always something exciting bubbling away at LAHC!
Year 7: Getting Shocked by Science!
Our brilliant Year 7 students have been diving into the world of static electricity—discovering how everyday objects can attract, repel, and even make your hair stand on end! From flying paper pieces to mini lightning sparks, it’s been a hands-on (and hair-raising!) introduction to the electrifying side of science!
Students have all successfully completed their expedition section of the award after two overnight stays this module. Starting with a practice session around Groombridge learning to camp, cook and navigate the countryside with maps and compasses, under the supervision of our AAP Outspark. This led to the Assessed Qualifier where they needed to demonstrate those skills and perform two fully loaded hikes with an overnight camp in between, around the Bewl Water area. Each and every member was a credit to their team and school, smashing every section like naturals!
Excitingly, we have also received a certificate from the Duke of Edinburgh’s award charity for logging a record number of hours volunteering in the local community. Our students have been supporting various members of the community in different clubs, homes, charity shops and libraries, playing their part in amassing an amazing 5.2 million hours of logged volunteering across the country.

Tonbridge Angels in Margate
On Saturday the 5th July on an overcast afternoon in Margate, Tonbridge Angels first team kicked off the 2025/2026 season in a pre season friendly.
Mackenzie in Year 12 at LAHC was on the bench and featured for the first team on occasion towards the end of last season which is itself a real achievement.
Mr Smith was watching on and told Mackenzie that he would score when he entered the fray, and Mackenzie listened to Mr Smith’s wise prediction and finished off a lovely team move to score the winning goal as the Angels defeated Margate 3-2 to kick off pre season.
Very well done to Mackenzie because for a 17 year old to be playing in a National League South team is a wonderful achievement, keep it up!
Imagine - Create - Inspire
Our annual End-of-Year Art and Photography Exhibition once again transformed our hall into a vibrant celebration of creativity, dedication, and talent. Over the course of a week and under sweltering conditions, our hardworking Sixth Formers curated and installed an ambitious and inspiring body of work, showcasing everything from mixed media, sculpture and printmaking to video and installation art.

After a fantastic year of supporting SEND students at Leigh Academy Hugh Christie, during which we have:
Supported 149 students in developing their reading and literacy skills, leading to some incredible progress. Two standout students are:
Riley Tapp: Reading age has increased by 2 years and 5 months.
Millie Brown: Reading age has increased by 2 years and 3 months
We have supported 83 students with numeracy using a specific assessment to target gaps in foundational knowledge and put in place bespoke support and intervention to close these gaps.
We have supported 52 students with social skills and communication and interaction needs utilising our own internal expertise plus a dedicated speech and language therapist. This support has helped students build confidence, improve peer relationships, and communicate more effectively in both social and learning environments.
We have supported 145 students with their emotional wellbeing by offering services such as dedicated keyworkers, mentoring, targeted support around emotional based school avoidance and counselling.
The Beacon is a new provision we introduced this year to offer a calm and supportive space for students who may need extra help managing their emotions or finding it difficult to fully engage in lessons. Over the year, it has supported 92 students, helping them to feel more settled and ready to learn. In many cases, it has made a real difference by providing the time and support they need to stay calm, reflect, and return to learning more positively.
We have served 1325 breakfast, free of charge, to students this year at our Breakfast Club which now serves 66 breakfast a day! This is about more than just providing breakfast - it gives students a calm, positive start to the day with support from key staff each morning.
Lighthouse Learners Explore Hastings
Finally, for the first time ever, we have taken out our most vulnerable students in the SRP on a successful school trip to Hastings to develop their independence and communication skills.
It was a wonderful day and the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I would like to thanks Mr Fissenden, Mr Carter, Miss Green and Mr Tanner for the fantastic support given to these students this year.

Small School Model - How our Colleges are shaping our student's experience
What's Been Happening in our Colleges
It has been a busy and rewarding term for our Coe students!
Our Year 11 students approached their exams with great focus and positivity, and many reported feeling very confident about their performance. Since finishing, some have set off on well-deserved holidays, others have started summer jobs, and a few enterprising students have even launched small businesses — including an innovative venture collecting and reselling second-hand golf balls!
Year 10 students have been gaining valuable real-world experience through work placements in a variety of settings, from riding stables and farms to engineering companies. These opportunities have given them fantastic insight into future career paths.
Year 9 students have also made us proud, with strong representation and success at the recent MYP Graduation Awards, showcasing their hard work and dedication throughout the year.
Our Year 7 and 8 students have been incredible ambassadors for the school, warmly welcoming visitors during open morning tours and Year 5 taster days. Their enthusiasm and kindness have truly shown Coe College at its best.
Finally, excitement is building as all slots for the first joint Leigh Academy and Hugh Christie sports day have now been filled. Our Coe students are training hard and are determined to bring the silverware home!
We are incredibly proud of all our students and wish everyone a restful and enjoyable summer break.
Mr Sargent
At Leigh Academy Hugh Christie, we love celebrating the diverse achievements of our students both in and out of the classroom—and this module, Attenborough College is thrilled to highlight two of our outstanding student athletes!
Sophie
Sophie has recently represented Tonbridge & Malling Districts at the Barcelona Girls Cup, held in the beautiful Salou and Cambrils region in southern Barcelona on the 7th and 8th of June. Competing in a 7-a-side group, Sophie played against teams from across Europe. On the first day, her team faced opponents from Catalonia, England, and France, and placing 3rd in their group. Day two brought more exciting challenges, with two closely contested matches against French teams. After a narrow 2–3 loss in the first game, Sophie and her team finished on a high with an impressive 3–0 victory. Sophie has had a memorable weekend, with a great opportunity to play great football, build new friendships and develop her team work/communication skills with players speaking different languages from around the world. Well done Sophie.
Oli
In May, Oli proudly represented the Tonbridge and Malling District Team at an international football tournament in Barcelona, showcasing his talent on the pitch. His team delivered an excellent performance, finishing 5th out of 13 teams overall—a fantastic achievement! His team was able to win the Group B final, a testament to their determination and teamwork. The experience offered Oli the chance to compete against players from a variety of nationalities, providing a valuable insight into different cultures and styles of play. It was also an excellent opportunity for him to develop key skills such as teamwork, communication, and resilience on the pitch. Well done, Oli! (Picture on the next slide)
Mr Harris
As we come to the end of another successful module, it’s been a pleasure to reflect on the incredible achievements of students across Angelou College. From academic excellence to personal growth, our students have shown what it truly means to be Ready, Respectful, and Responsible, consistently upholding the values at the heart of our academy.
Our Year 11 students demonstrated remarkable dedication, resilience, and maturity throughout their GCSE examinations. They approached this crucial period with focus and determination, supporting each other and maintaining high standards right to the end. Their time with us concluded with a fantastic Year 11 Prom, where they celebrated their journey, friendships, and accomplishments in style. We are incredibly proud of the way they conducted themselves and wish them every success in their next chapter.
Year 10 students have mirrored this commitment, applying themselves fully during their mock examinations and gaining valuable insights into their progress. Following this, they represented both the academy and Angelou College superbly during their work experience placements, showing professionalism, independence, and a growing awareness of life beyond school. Their efforts received glowing feedback from staff and employers alike.
Our Year 9 students were centre stage at the MYP Celebration event, where their successes and contributions over the year were recognised and celebrated. It was a joy to see so many students acknowledged for their hard work, creativity, and dedication across a range of subjects and activities. They continue to grow into thoughtful, well-rounded young people.
Our Year 7 and 8 students have been consistently positive and engaged in their learning. They embody our college values every day, showing a real willingness to take on challenges, support their peers, and contribute to the wider school community. Their attitude both in and out of lessons has been exemplary.
A real highlight for the college was the annual Sports Day, where all year groups came together in a brilliant display of team spirit, effort, and pride. Students proudly wore their Angelou purple, cheered each other on, and competed with energy and integrity—perfectly capturing what it means to be part of Angelou College.
We are incredibly proud of the achievements, behaviour, and attitude shown by all of our students this term. They continue to represent Angelou College with pride and purpose, and we look forward to seeing what they will go on to achieve next.
