Module 5
Dear Parents / Carers,
I hope this message finds you well. Firstly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your continued support of our academy.
As shared earlier in this module, we are delighted to have received a very positive Challenge Partners Review report. This report recognises the rapid and sustained improvements we have made across the academy. We are proud of the inclusive and aspirational environment we have built, as well as the increasing confidence and success of our students. As we continue on our journey toward becoming a centre of excellence, our commitment remains steadfast: one staff, one vision, one team. You can access the full report on our academy website.
Our Year 11 and Year 13 students have made an excellent start to their final examinations and are completing them with focus and determination. Their resilience and dedication during this critical period have been truly commendable. I would also like to thank our staff for providing a wide range of intervention and support sessions—these have been invaluable in helping our students prepare effectively.
We are also working closely with our local primary schools to provide experience events for Year 5 pupils. We’re pleased to be able to support these schools by offering access to our academy facilities for aspects of their KS2 curriculum. This partnership continues to strengthen and brings mutual benefits to both our students and those in our wider community.
Looking ahead, our Year 10 and Year 12 students will sit their first mock examinations next module in preparation for their final exams next year. They are being well prepared in lessons and have access to revision materials via Google Classroom on their Chromebooks. Please do continue to support your child as they prepare for these important assessments—this will lay a strong foundation for their final year.
We encourage you to take a moment to read about the various activities and events that have taken place throughout this module, which are featured in this newsletter.
Finally, please note that Friday, 27th June is a staff INSET day and the academy will be closed to students.
On behalf of the entire academy, I wish you and your family a restful and enjoyable May half-term break. We look forward to welcoming our students back on Monday, 2nd June 2025 at 8:25am.
Best regards,
Mr Palak Shah
Principal

On many occasions, Libby has proudly represented the academy by supporting key events, including leading parent tours, participating in student voice panels with an IB consultant, and contributing meaningfully during our rigorous Challenge Partners review. Her ability to articulate the student experience with clarity and passion reflects her strong communication skills and deep sense of pride in her school.

Rosie’s positive attitude is reflected in every interaction, and her efforts have not gone unnoticed—she has earned an impressive 419 reward points to date. But more importantly, she has earned the respect and admiration of both staff and peers through her actions, not just her achievements.

Rosie reflects many of the key traits of the IB Learner Profile—she is caring, balanced, and shows a genuine desire to grow both personally and academically. Her natural ability to connect with people and her willingness to contribute wherever she can make her a standout role model in Year 8.
Rosie’s contribution to our academy continues to shine brightly. We are proud to celebrate her as a young leader of great promise and integrity.

Well done, Grace—keep striving, keep shining!
With so many outstanding students demonstrating excellence every day, choosing just three to highlight was no easy task. Yet Libby, Rosie, and Grace have each stood out in remarkable ways—through their consistent dedication, positive mindset, and their embodiment of the values we cherish at Leigh Academy Hugh Christie.
Each of them brings something special to our community. Whether it’s their approach to learning, their willingness to lead and support others, or their active contribution to academy life, Libby, Rosie, and Grace reflect the very best of what it means to be a Leigh Academy Hugh Christie student. Their integrity, determination, and commitment to making a difference make them true role models for their peers.
Our talented Year 8 students at Leigh Academy Hugh Christie have been exploring the exciting intersection of creativity, craftsmanship, and sustainability through their recent project: designing and making environmentally friendly bags.
From the very beginning, students were encouraged to think critically about what it means to be sustainable in today’s world. They conducted in-depth research into environmental issues, including the impact of fast fashion, before identifying ways they could design practical, reusable alternatives that reflect both ethical values and aesthetic appeal.
Using this knowledge as inspiration, students sketched and developed initial design concepts, taking into account sustainability, function, and personal style. They created their own design templates, experimented with block printing and fabric paints to apply patterns and motifs, and explored different ways to reflect their individual message through visual storytelling on fabric.
With their final designs complete, students moved on to the making process, with a range of sewing techniques, from pinning and cutting to hand stitching and attaching handles. Their attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, finished products was truly impressive.
This project not only developed their practical skills in textiles and design technology but also deepened their understanding of the global responsibility we all share in making sustainable choices. Their creativity, curiosity, and sense of purpose shone through at every stage of the journey.
Here are just a few examples of the stunning array of personalised, eco-conscious bags that demonstrate both technical skill and a strong moral message. We are incredibly proud of the resilience, innovation, and thoughtful design thinking our Year 8 students have shown.
Shining Stars in A Level Design Technology / Product Design
We are incredibly proud to celebrate the outstanding commitment, creativity, and craftsmanship of Christian and Alfie, two of our dedicated A Level Design & Technology students at Leigh Academy Hugh Christie.
Throughout the course, both students have shown the qualities that define a truly exceptional DT learner—resilience, independence, attention to detail, and an unwavering desire to refine and improve. Their ability to take on complex design challenges, solve real-world problems, and turn concepts into high-quality, functional prototypes has been nothing short of inspirational.
Their recent prototype work speaks volumes. Alfie’s cabinet design is beautifully constructed, precise in form, and showcases an excellent understanding of materials, structure, and presentation. Christian’s chess-inspired storage solution combines innovation, practical use, and striking aesthetics—a fantastic example of how good design blends creativity and functionality.
What sets Christian and Alfie apart is not just the skill in their making, but the careful research, design thinking, and iteration behind every stage of their projects. They consistently demonstrate:
A deep understanding of materials and manufacturing techniques
A critical eye for detail and function
Independent problem-solving skills
And above all, a passion for design and a drive to succeed
Their work reflects what we value most in A Level DT students—precision, perseverance, originality, and professionalism.
Christian and Alfie, we are so very proud of what you’ve accomplished so far, and we can't wait to see where your talents take you next. You truly embody the spirit of our subject and inspire others through your example.

Challenge Partners is a practitioner-led charity focused on raising standards and reducing educational inequality. Their peer-led Quality Assurance Review (QAR) is a rigorous process designed to challenge schools and provides schools with robust assessment of strengths and areas of development from experienced external leaders to support continuous improvement.
The review team, made up of senior school leaders from other settings, visited Leigh Academy Hugh Christie in May 2025. They recognised the academy’s “transformational leadership to drive behavioural, attitudinal, and cultural excellence,” accrediting this as a designated Area of Excellence.
Key strengths highlighted in the report include:
Ambitious and unified leadership: “Senior leaders have successfully transformed the ethos of this school” with “very high expectations…relentlessly pursued,” creating an “ambitious and positive learning environment.”
Strong community and culture: A “very strong and infectious sense of belonging, cohesion and community” is evident across the academy, with leaders promoting a shared vision and inclusive values.
Behaviour and attitudes: A consistent behaviour strategy with a warm but strict approach has led to “disruption-free learning” and significantly improved attendance, behaviour, and student outcomes. Positive behaviour points now make up over 80% of all logged events.
Curriculum quality: The school delivers a “rigorous, broad and balanced curriculum,” enriched by the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Teaching is adapted to meet students’ needs and regularly reviewed for impact.
Support for disadvantaged and SEND students: There is a “very strong culture of inclusion” and a strategic approach to SEND and pupil premium provision. Staff know their students well and adapt teaching to support them individually.
Personal development: The school delivers a “spiral personal development curriculum,” covering topics such as well-being, relationships, and online safety. A wide range of enrichment opportunities is in place, supported by an extensive careers programme.
The review also recognised several measurable outcomes which reflect the progress being made across the academy:
Student achievement is rising, with disadvantaged and SEND pupils making stronger academic progress.
Engagement in lessons and wider school life continues to improve in a calm, purposeful environment across the academy.
Overall student attendance has improved by over 6 percentage points in the last year.
Persistent absence for disadvantaged and SEND students has fallen sharply.

Most importantly, they discover the power of making a difference—locally and globally.
This project wasn’t just about raising money; it was about raising awareness, building confidence, and showing that young people can create real change when given the opportunity. We couldn’t be prouder of their dedication, maturity, and community spirit.
Well done,
Lara Louise, Bethany, and Jamerson—you’ve set an inspiring example for us all!
Year 8 Explore Crime, Consequences and Justice in PSHE
This module, our Year 8 students have taken a deep dive into the complex world of crime and punishment through an exciting and thought-provoking PSHE unit. From the very first lesson, pupils were challenged to question what justice really means—and to consider how law, morality, and society intersect in real life.
Kicking off with powerful questions like "Why do people commit crimes?" and "Can wrong choices ever be justified?", students examined the many factors that can influence human behaviour, including peer pressure, personal circumstance, social inequality, and mental health. These early discussions set the stage for meaningful reflection and respectful debate, with students showcasing maturity and insight as they considered perspectives different from their own.
As the unit progressed, students unpacked the six key aims of punishment—vindication, protection, reformation, reparation, retribution, and deterrence—through a variety of case studies, role-play scenarios, and structured debates. They tackled challenging ethical questions such as "Should justice be about punishment or rehabilitation?" and "How can society balance fairness with safety?".
One of the most memorable activities involved students designing their own justice systems, where they had to weigh moral principles against practical realities. The creativity, empathy, and logic on display during these sessions were truly impressive.
This unit has not only deepened students’ understanding of the justice system—it has also strengthened key life skills such as:
🗣️ Critical thinking and debate
🤝 Empathy and ethical reasoning
🧠 Personal reflection and decision-making
🌍 Social responsibility and community awareness
It’s been fantastic to see Year 8 students engaged, articulate, and passionate about issues that shape the world around them. Their ability to approach complex moral dilemmas with compassion, curiosity, and a willingness to listen is a clear sign of their growth as thoughtful citizens of the future.
Well done, Year 8—you’ve shown exactly what it means to learn for life.
This module, our Year 10 students have truly stepped up—engaging with some of the most pressing and challenging topics facing young people today. Through open, honest, and mature discussion, they’ve explored how the choices we make can shape not only our own lives, but the safety and wellbeing of those around us.
From peer pressure and healthy relationships to knife crime and county lines, students examined the real-life consequences of risky behaviour and learned how to recognise the signs of danger, seek help, and make responsible decisions. Their willingness to confront these difficult subjects with sensitivity and thoughtfulness has been commendable.
A significant part of the unit also addressed the digital landscape, with powerful sessions on the impact of harmful online content, including the rise of online misogyny and radicalisation. Students explored how social media can influence attitudes, reinforce stereotypes, and shape personal identity. They also discussed strategies for building resilience and challenging negative messages—developing the confidence to speak up for what’s right.
Throughout the module, Year 10 demonstrated:
🧠 Critical thinking in analysing real-life scenarios
💬 Respectful communication in class discussions
🚫 A strong sense of moral responsibility and personal boundaries
These are not easy topics to unpack—but Year 10 rose to the occasion with maturity, empathy, and a genuine desire to understand the world around them.
We are incredibly proud of how they’ve approached this learning—equipping themselves with the knowledge and confidence to make positive, informed choices both now and in the future.
This Module our Sixth Form students have been developing essential life skills through a focused and practical exploration of personal finance—equipping themselves with the knowledge and confidence to navigate life beyond the classroom.
Through a series of interactive and thought-provoking sessions, students have explored a range of real-world financial topics, including:
🏦 Understanding student loans and how repayments are structured
💼 Decoding payslips, tax codes, and salary deductions
📄 Comparing different types of employment contracts—from part-time to freelance
💳 Evaluating the pros and cons of credit cards, loans, and buy-now-pay-later schemes
💡 Making sense of savings options and choosing the right bank accounts
The unit also sparked meaningful discussions around budgeting, financial responsibility, and how to avoid common money mistakes, such as overspending or falling into debt traps.
With university, apprenticeships, and the world of work fast approaching, these sessions have provided Sixth Formers with the tools they need to make informed financial choices and manage their money with greater independence and awareness.
By tackling these topics head-on, our students are not just preparing for the next step—they're building the foundations for long-term financial wellbeing. A brilliant effort from all involved!
Our holistic approach to Personal Development aims to provide students with knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a fulfilling and active part in society. This module, we have been focusing on the IB Learner profile of Balanced, as we look at the balance between our lived experience and those that lived through WW2 on VE Day, and the balance between renewable and finite energy sources on Earth Day.
Earth Day
In assemblies, for Earth Day on 22.04.2025, students learned about different energy sources. This year’s Earth Day theme is Our Power, Our Planet. Earth Day is a day celebrated worldwide that raises awareness on our environmental issues. It serves as a reminder that we need to look after our planet for us and our future generations. The main focus this year is on using renewable energy to sustain our plant for a healthy and prosperous future.
Renewable Energy Sources
Students also looked at renewable energy sources in advisory sessions, where they worked in groups to research and discuss the different types of renewable energy and their benefits.
From the 12th - 18th May, we highlighted Mental Health Awareness Week through advisory sessions and assemblies.
Since 2001, the Mental Health Foundation has been leading Mental Health Awareness Week - bringing the UK together to focus on getting good mental health. This year, the week takes place from 12 to 18 May 2025 and the theme is 'community'.
We want to use this Mental Health Awareness Week to celebrate the power and importance of community.
Being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our mental health and wellbeing. We thrive when we have strong connections with other people and supportive communities that remind us, we are not alone. Communities can provide a sense of belonging, safety, support in hard times, and give us a sense purpose, and we want to ensure this is the case for the entirety of our Leigh Academy Hugh Christie Community
What a busy and rewarding module it has been in the English Department!
Our dedicated team has been working tirelessly to support our Year 11 students as they gear up for their upcoming examinations. We've been running extra revision sessions, providing targeted feedback, and offering a supportive environment to ensure they feel confident and well-prepared to showcase their hard work. We wish them the very best in the weeks ahead!
We are also thrilled to announce the continued success of our students in the Sparx Reader program. For the third time, we are the most improved school within the Leigh Academies Trust! This fantastic achievement is a testament to the students' engagement with reading and the positive impact the program is having on their literacy skills. Keep up the amazing work, everyone!
Looking ahead, we have some exciting theatrical experiences planned. Our Theatre Club is buzzing with anticipation for their summer term visit to the iconic Globe Theatre to see a unique Wild West reimagining of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. This promises to be an unforgettable experience, bringing a fresh and dynamic perspective to a classic tale.
Furthermore, we are delighted to offer a trip to the National Theatre to see Tennessee Williams' powerful and poignant play, A Streetcar Named Desire. This visit is specifically aimed at our growing Key Stage 5 students and those in Year 11 considering studying Literature or Media A Levels. It will provide invaluable insight into dramatic interpretation and the enduring themes explored in classic texts.
Finally, we must celebrate the wonderful achievements of our students in the recent Book Creator exhibition. The imagination on display was truly inspiring. Well done to all involved - hopefully we will be able to report some overall winner when the trust results come in! Finally, we we want to commend one of our talented Year 8 students for their exceptional creative writing piece based on our study of conflict poetry:
Forgotten Men
By Lucy
Past my window men walk
Full of hope and fear
Uniform smart and ready
For the fight ahead
While they fight
I sit tight
I give them orders
Not knowing the consequences
I sit in my chair
Getting all the credit and applause
“You are a great leader” they say
My uniform is filled with medals and awards
For my braveness and leadership
Though I haven't left these four walls
I have achieved so much
Once again they walk past my window
This time there were less
Their faces filled with grief and sorrow
These men had no trophies
They were forgotten men.

This module, the History Department has truly brought the past to life, transforming lessons and corridors into a vibrant and moving tribute to one of the most significant moments in British history—VE Day (Victory in Europe Day).
To mark the anniversary of 8th May 1945, when World War II officially ended in Europe, our students have immersed themselves in the stories, struggles, and celebrations of wartime Britain.
Thought-provoking assemblies explored the emotional impact of VE Day across the country—from the uncontainable joy in the streets to the sombre remembrance of those who never returned. Students were challenged to think critically about the legacy of the war and how this victory shaped the freedoms and international relationships we value today.
In true 1940s spirit, our History corridors were transformed into a wartime street party, complete with bunting, Union Jacks, and immersive displays. These visual experiences not only captured the atmosphere of post-war celebration but also prompted meaningful discussions about the role of ordinary people on the home front, wartime resilience, and the journey to peace.
From engaging classroom discussions to curiosity-piquing displays, this has been a powerful opportunity for students to reflect on the past, appreciate the sacrifices made, and understand the enduring relevance of history in our lives today.
We are incredibly proud of the maturity, enthusiasm, and insight our students have shown—and the History Department's work this module has been nothing short of inspiring.
It’s been a busy and brilliant module in the Geography Department at Leigh Academy Hugh Christie, with fieldwork adventures, academic achievements, and classroom excellence all taking centre stage!
KS3 Star: Vinnie (Year 8)
A huge round of applause for Vinnie, who has shown outstanding dedication and maturity in his Geography lessons this module. His thoughtful responses, active participation, and commitment to acting on feedback have really stood out. Vinnie’s determination to improve his written work is paying off—and his Hot Chocolate Friday nomination was well deserved. Keep it up, Vinnie—you’re on the path to great success!
KS5 Stars: Our Year 12 Fieldwork Crew!
A massive shout-out to Ishanvi, Josh, Alex, Jonah, Julian and Nick, who represented our Sixth Form brilliantly on the residential fieldwork trip to Swanage and Studland Bay. Their focus, curiosity, and teamwork were exceptional throughout. The group are now fully prepped and ready to begin their NEA (Non-Examination Assessment) in Module 6—and we can’t wait to see what they produce!
This term’s three-day residential trip to Swanage and Studland Bay was a fantastic success! Blessed with perfect fieldwork weather, students tackled a range of coastal and human geography investigations, sharpening their practical research skills and building confidence in data collection and analysis.
Staying at YHA Swanage, the group enjoyed a packed itinerary across stunning coastal landscapes. Whether investigating longshore drift, beach profiles, or urban land use, our students approached every task with focus and enthusiasm.
And of course, there was time for fun too! A night of ten-pin bowling in Poole brought plenty of laughs—and some competitive spirit (congratulations to Mr Heffernan, reigning champion of both rounds!).
The trip not only strengthened their fieldwork skills, but also built camaraderie and excitement for the next phase of their studies.
We’ve also been proud to run successful intervention sessions for Year 11 students preparing for their Geography Paper 1 exam. The sessions have been well attended and filled with energy, as students continue to show a strong commitment to their learning.
From hands-on investigations to high-level thinking, Module 5 has showcased everything that makes Geography such a dynamic and exciting subject. We’re proud of all our students—bring on Module 6!
Celebrating Success, Confidence, and Real-World Skills!
We are thrilled to celebrate some outstanding achievements in the January 2025 Business examinations, with results released just before Easter.
At Key Stage 5, every single student who sat the Business Finance examination achieved a Merit grade or higher—a phenomenal result that reflects the effort and determination of the group. A special mention must go to Molly, who secured a Distinction—an exceptional achievement showcasing her strong understanding of financial concepts and her ability to apply them in a vocational context.
At Key Stage 4, our Year 11 students also performed brilliantly, with Marko earning an extremely high Distinction—a result that places him among the top achievers nationally. Marko’s dedication, attention to detail, and analytical thinking are truly commendable.
Well done to all our students who sat exams—your hard work has paid off and your success sets the standard for others to follow!
In Module 5, the spotlight now turns to the exciting world of enterprise, communication, and innovation as both KS4 and KS5 students gear up for one of the most dynamic parts of their course: Business Presentations.
Year 10 students are preparing individual presentations, showcasing their understanding of key business concepts, communication strategies, and decision-making in real-world contexts.
Year 13 students are taking things a step further with group presentations on Enterprise and Innovation—exploring real business ideas, market gaps, and product development in a team format.
We’re incredibly excited to see students take ownership of their work, develop their confidence, and present professionally in front of their peers and teachers. These presentations are not only a core part of their assessment but a powerful opportunity to build skills that will serve them well in future careers.
The Business Department is proud to lead a curriculum that is practical, ambitious, and inspiring. Our students are developing into confident, articulate, and knowledgeable young professionals—and Module 5 has shown us just how far they’ve come.
Well done, and bring on more success in Module 6!

Celebrating Creativity, Connection, and Support at LAHC
It’s been a busy and inspiring term for the SEN Department at Leigh Academy Hugh Christie, with new initiatives taking shape, vibrant student work on display, and a strong sense of community growing across all areas of support.
Students within our Specialist Resource Provision (SRP) have been proudly developing their social and communication skills through a powerful creative project titled "My Perfect View." This thoughtful and deeply personal artwork will be on display outside the SRP, giving students the chance to celebrate their individuality and express their feelings and perspectives through art. It’s been wonderful to see such confidence and pride shine through every piece.
Our Breakfast Club continues to go from strength to strength, now supporting over 20 students each morning. For some, it offers a calm and positive start to the day; for others, it’s a safe space to socialise, connect, and build friendships across different year groups. It’s been heartening to see a real sense of belonging grow in this space.
