My name is Mr. Kang and I'm a math teacher here at WMS! My teaching philosophy is that I'm here to guide all students to learn to the best of their abilities. I will coach, scaffold, and provide avenues for students to learn and practice all sorts of knowledge within the barrier called "mathematics." Although grades in this class matter, I firmly believe that it is only an extension of how much you try to learn in this class. As long as we try our best to learn, the grades will follow!

Education Background
As you can see above, all my post secondary higher education was done at University of California, Irvine. Although I didn't plan it that way, I was given a tremendous opportunity to complete my undergrad studies in 2 years (07 - 09), which opened doors for me to try many different interests I had. I got to experience Law school, Banking and Financing industry, and web/ app developing industry before I went back to school to get my Master's degree in Teaching! Through all my experiences while in and out of school, I saw the need and the importance of solid mathematical foundation. Although I've never thought I'd become a teacher, I realized how much I've enjoyed working with students during my Minor studies and I haven't regretted my decision to become a teacher even until now.
Antecedentes educativos
Teaching Career so far...
Orange County School of Arts (OCSA) - 2 years (including student teaching)
Los Angeles school of Engineering (LASE) - 1 year
University of California, Irvine (UCI) - 2 years
Magnolia Science Academy (MSA)- 3 years
Washington Middle School (WMS) - 4 years and on.
Prior to coming to WMS, I taught at 2 different high schools for total of 5 years. I also had the opportunity to give lectures at higher institutions such as UCI or LASE as well. Within those years, I taught various levels of mathematics, sciences, computer sciences, engineering, robotics, web developments, sound engineering and political science. Working with variety of different levels of students along with various divergent subjects helped me improve a better sense of lesson planning, curriculum development, and most importantly, how to care and communicate with students.
Personal Background
I'm an immigrant from South Korea. I came to the States when I was 12 and joined 6th grade Elementary. Since I moved to California, I actually grew up fairly locally. I finished Elementary (Rolling Hills), Junior High (Ladera Vista), and High School (Fullerton Union high school) all in Fullerton, which is just 1 city over. I used to hangout in areas where many of our students still hangout today.
Similar to many of our students, I was also an English Learner. When I moved here, I didn't even know all the alphabets so I had to start from the blank in 6th grade. Luckily, with great teachers recognizing my improvement, I was able to get re-designated during my 7th grade year, which allowed me to test into International Baccalaureate program starting 9th grade. I ended up graduating high school with AP/ IB scholar in all subjects including English. What I learned from this experience is that any students can overcome the language barrier if they put their mind to it. I wanted to play sports and hangout with friends, which forced me to learn the language, which had nothing to do with academics. As long as positive, motivation can come from anywhere and I'd love to help all students find that source.
Antecedentes personales
Personal Interest/ Hobby
I love sports. I grew up watching Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey. Before judging me after looking at my teams, let me explain. My father is from SF and he loves Football and Baseball (now only thing he plays is Golf...), which is why I'm all SF for those two sports. Sometimes people ask me why I won't switch teams, and my answer is simple: because my teams are still better!! That being said, I enjoy many types of outdoors activities such as Rock Climbing or Cycling. Unfortunately, I've recently hurt my spine around my neck and I'm unable to partake in actual activities... But that doesn't mean I don't get to enjoy tailgating and watching sports~
If you would like to get to know me better, I'd love to sit and chat! I hope all the information I've shared on this page can be a way for me to connect with my students. What I firmly believe is this: school is important and learning is crucial. But what good is it if you can't enjoy things you like with people that you love? We better ourselves not because of immediate rewards, but so that we can responsibly exercise our freedom and our rights. Let's all be disciplined, work hard and play hard!
