The Adventures of a South Pole Pig

Starting February 20, 2019 our school will be embarking on a special project; an all school book club called Read To Them: One Book, Two Schools. We are joining the students and families at Grimshaw Elementary who have completed their reading in February. Every child will receive a copy of the same book – Chris Kurtz’s The Adventures of a South Pole Pig - and be asked to read it at home over the next month (check the lavender bookmark or click on the Reading Schedule tab in the top right) We are personally asking you to allow time so your family can participate in this special activity. Visit the Read To Them website if you would like more information.

Your child will receive his/her copy of The Adventures of a South Pole Pig at a our family night (Feb. 20th) introducing the program and the book. Included in the book is a special bookmark with a tailored reading schedule so you can keep up at home. Generally you will be asked to read 1-2 chapters per night – about 15-20 minutes per night. Additionally, Lafayette CSD, Onondaga Nation School and Grimshaw will have their own youtube page where various staff members have volunteered to read for each of the assigned reading days. To access this youtube page go to the school homepage (www.lafayetteschools.org/ons) and click on the link .

With the One Book, Two Schools program, we aim to build a community of readers at our school and in our community. Everyone - students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff - will be participating, and we can all reap the many benefits.

In classes and school, there may be various activities which discuss or explore the book. Some activities include a parade, an amazing race, character dance and even visits from characters! You will want to make sure your family keeps up so your child can be included.

Throughout the month, everyone will be talking about The Adventures of a South Pole Pig! Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. And we also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students, but that will still captivate and stimulate older children.

A huge thank you to Lafayette CSD and ONS PTS for funding the project and all the families who support us. Keep checking back for more photos and videos (tabs at top right) related to the South Pole Pig and her friends!

Enjoy sharing this story with your community!
