Traffickers used busy ports, false paperwork, legal cargo, warehouses, and corrupt contacts to make ivory harder to detect and easier to move across borders.

• Hiding ivory inside legal cargo
  Traffickers often concealed ivory inside shipments that appeared ordinary from the outside. Ivory could be packed under or mixed with legal goods such as timber, charcoal, ginger, plastic products, cow horns, or other commercial items. This made the shipment look like normal trade instead of wildlife crime.

• Using busy ports and shipping routes
  Ports such as Apapa and Onne are important because they connected Nigeria to global shipping routes. Since large ports process huge amounts of cargo, traffickers could take advantage of the volume and try to move illegal ivory through the same systems used for legal exports.

• Creating false or misleading paperwork
  Ivory is often disguised through shipping documents. Instead of being listed as ivory, the cargo could be labeled as something legal and ordinary. This allowed traffickers to hide the crime on paper before the shipment was even inspected.

• Using front companies
  Some trafficking networks used logistics companies or short-term businesses to move illegal goods. These companies could appear legitimate long enough to arrange shipments. Once they became too risky, traffickers could abandon them and make another company.

• Moving through transit countries
  Shipments could move through transit points such as Singapore, Malaysia, or Hong Kong before reaching destinations like Vietnam or China. These extra stops made the route harder to trace and helped hide the shipment’s original source.

• Breaking the process into separate roles
  Trafficking networks often divided the work among different people. One person might collect the ivory, another might store it, another might pack it, and another might arrange the export. This made the network harder to investigate because each person only handled one part of the operation.

• Using warehouses and trading hubs
  These warehouses allowed traffickers to gather products from different sources, prepare shipments, hide ivory with other goods, and wait for the right time to move it to a port.

• Moving ivory through unpotected border routes
  Some ivory entered Nigeria through weakly monitored borders instead of official checkpoints. Traffickers could use remote roads, rivers, coastal routes, buses, boats, or walking paths to move contraband into the country. 

• Relying on corruption to avoid inspection
  Traffickers can rely on bribery or corrupt contacts to reduce the chance of containers being searched. If someone inside the system helped a shipment avoid inspection, the ivory became much easier to move.

• Disguising worked ivory as ordinary objects
  Ivory is not always moved as tusks. Ivory could also be carved into jewelry, figurines, name seals, decorations, or small luxury items. These smaller pieces are easier to hide because they look like souvenirs, crafts, or personal belongings.

• Using ordinary transportation before export
  Before reaching a major port, ivory could move by truck, bus, car, boat, or private vehicle. These smaller movements connected border areas, source regions, markets, warehouses, and export points.
