The Libro Love Student Book Review Committee was started at La Academia De Esperanza Charter High School during the coronavirus pandemic in the spring of 2020. A group of teachers who are passionate about both reading and cultural representation in education came together in the spirit of love, libros, and learning, to offer a unique opportunity for students to participate in the reading and reviewing of contemporary books that could be used in our English Language Arts curriculum. We invited 10 students to join us in this new endeavor, and from there we expanded our vision to include the participation of family, friends, and students from other schools in our monthly readings and meetings. Our core group of LADE students participate in reading, discussing, and providing feedback for collaborative book reviews. It is our desire to provide student informed reviews of a large selection of contemporary texts that will help teachers in New Mexico, and all over the country, to provide culturally relevant and sustaining reading opportunities for their students.
