The Instructional Materials Committee (IMC) reviews curriculum and makes any necessary recommendations for adoption of core classroom materials, as well as supplementary instructional materials. The committee’s goal is to provide the most up-to-date, research-based, and appropriate learning materials for teachers and students. Standards-aligned and modern curriculum materials are critical tools for classroom learning. In the hands of our teachers, such materials are intended to move students through mastery of fundamental concepts to deeper thinking.
The IMC is guided by RCW 28A.320.230, which requires us to establish procedures for the selection and adoption of instructional materials. This law ensures transparency, consistency, and community representation in decisions about curriculum resources.
Specifically, RCW 28A.320.230 outlines that:
Each district must establish an Instructional Materials Committee, which includes teachers, administrators, and parents/community members. We must have a district administrator on this committee, and the parent/community members must comprise less than half of the committee's membership.
The IMC is charged with evaluating instructional materials for alignment to state learning standards, educational goals, and appropriateness for students.
The committee makes formal recommendations to the Board of Directors, who hold the final authority to adopt instructional materials.
If you are interested in joining the Instructional Materials Committee (IMC) as a parent or community member, please email michelle.oneil@lacenterschools.org.
