Horror Movie Season

Jasmin Garcia

Have you ever sat down comfortably with the remote in your hand scrolling and scrolling through movies but can’t find anything to watch? Holiday seasons like Halloween are a great time to focus on catching up on the plethora of horror movies with family and friends. Here are some horror movies I recommend to watch during Halloween that include terrifying scenes.

Halloween (2018)

Summary: On the night of Halloween, Michael Myers, who is a serial killer, finally escapes as he gets transferred. Myers had been locked up in an institution for many years because of his horrible past and his mental health. Throughout his life he has had the desire to kill Laurie Strode but has never gotten the chance to fulfill his wishes. Now he is back but with the surprise that Laurie is prepared this time and is ready to face him.

Why I Like it: I love all the Halloween movies but especially this one because Laurie comes back into Michael Myers’ life. It’s exciting seeing her come back prepared to confront him

Evil Dead Rise (2023)

Summary: A family that lives in apartments experiences an earthquake which opens a large crack in the parking garage. A teenager named Danny curiously goes into a crack on the ground and retrieves a book called “Book of the Dead”. He brings it back to his apartment and flips through it but doesn’t realize that he unleashes an evil demon, which possesses his own mother who tries to kill her own family later on. All three children are left without a cell reception, elevator, or stairs to get out. They become terrified and lost on what is happening to their mother.

Why I like it: This movie is full of jump scares and suspense which is what I enjoy. It’s terrifying seeing the mother because you never know her next move.

The Curse of La Llorona (2019)

Summary: A Hispanic legend comes to life when a weeping woman goes crying into the night, trying to find her children that she drowned herself. She goes haunting in the night and ends up marking two kids on their arms and doesn’t stop until she gets her arms around them but deals with a stubborn mother who is not ready to let go of her children. The mother does her best to release this curse but struggles because La llorona never stops until she has the children she wants.

Why I like it: I like this movie because it's a story that I was told when I was small. Watching a movie makes the legend of “La Llorona” more interesting and entertaining.

Insidious (2019)

Summary: A family moves into a new home but starts experiencing weird things after a boy named Dalton falls from a ladder in the attic and falls into a coma. Doctors are not able to diagnose his problem and his parents become worried. Little do they know that there is much more to this comma than they think.

Why I like it: This movie is full of  jump scares that aren’t predictable. I enjoy this movie because the family stresses out and tries to figure out ways to bring their child back to the real world.

Although you can watch horror movies any time of the year, Halloween is the best time to enjoy jumpscares and the spirit of the holiday. Fall is the perfect time to stay at home and watch movies that signal the changing seasons. The evenings start to get darker and colder, which makes you want to sit down in pajamas with snacks and watch a good movie. I hope you like and enjoy these movies as much as I do.
