We will be reading a lot as a whole class, but once a semester, I would also like you to be reading a novel of your own choosing.
Your two graded products at the end of the semester will be:
Standards and rubrics can be found here
Once a semester, AP Literature students will select one novel from the list below in addition to an Open Response Prompt to write on for a final assessment. Students can either self-purchase novels (Amazon links included), or they may fill out a purchase order by each semester's deadline.
After choosing a novel, please select an essay prompt that you would like to write on at the end of the semester using your independent reading novel. The list of Open Response essay prompts (from 1970 to 2017) shows all test questions since the inception of the test, including some missing ones. The College Board AP Lit site lists essay prompts since 1999 and also gives student examples of each open response essay. You can use the suggested questions for guidance, or you can choose a different one.
Once your novel and question selections are finalized, you must record them using this Google form. Feel free to sample the books and change your mind until the deadline. For Fall Semester 2018, the deadline is Friday, August 31, 2018. For Spring Semester 2019, the deadline is Friday, January 11.
You can see all of the class choices, including the ones from first semester, here.
**Note: Novel/essay combinations from first semester will not be repeated. For instance, if Student A chose Brave New World and the 2006 essay prompt for first semester, Student B can choose the same novel but will not have the same essay prompt.
