Beginning and Advanced Percussion Bands
Music is a performing art. Performing will be a large part of our grade.
What do we play?: Since students are older, they have a choice about the types of instruments we will focus on for classroom projects.
Both bands decided they wanted to focus on Caribbean Steel Drums for right now. We have 10 instruments but a steel drum band also has auxillary instruments. In our percussion bands we are also using an Electric Bass Guitar and a Drum Set. All students have recieved the beginning basics to start these instruments. We also supplement our Steel drums with Metallophones and a Vibraphone which has a similar quality as the Steel Drums when played with a hard mallet. Many students are assigned to two instruments so everyone has experience on the Steel Drums. As the semester continues, students will be learning how to play scales on barred instruments, getting fluency on reading musical notation and percussion instrument techniques.
Grading is as follows:
We meet 4 days per week for 40 minutes.
4 points per day: 16 per week for class participation
1 point per day for mastery learning their instrumental part: 4
Each performance is worth 40 points each
*If a student is unable to attend a performance, they may make up the 40 points by watching a video of the performance and writing a two paragraph-10 sentence constructive critique.
