Sound is a ubiquitous form of physical energy in the environment and serves as a vital source of information for us through one of our five senses. But what does sound mean to an individual cell? In the history of life sciences, whether audible sound waves trigger any kind of response in cells has rarely been investigated in a systematic way. Given that environmental and internal sound waves carry enough calculated energy to be "noticed" by cells, I hypothesized that sound might exert some direct, mechanical effect on them.
Thus far, we have discovered that sound wave stimulation can induce changes in cellular gene expression, metabolism, morphology, and differentiation, and we have partially uncovered the intracellular mechanisms driving these responses. So, why and how do cells perceive sound waves? To address this question, we are conducting research that combines various experiments at both the cellular and organismal levels with diverse acoustic environments. Through these approaches, we aim to unravel the fundamental relationship between life and sound, answering the ultimate question: What exactly is sound to living organisms?

Acoustic waves, as non-material stimuli, possess highly useful properties for cellular and biological manipulation:
Simplicity: Easy generation via simple vibrators
Manipulability: Flexible control of signal strength and patterns through electronic outputs
Safety: Immediate on/off switching capability
Permeability: Stable stimulus delivery to tissue-level depths
Versatility: Broad frequency range and infinite pattern variations
Adaptability: High integration with existing life science tools
To date, we have discovered that acoustic stimulation triggers notable responses in stromal cells—such as muscle, bone, and adipose cells—and particularly acts to suppress the differentiation and maturation of adipocytes. Moving forward, we aim to pioneer "sonobiotechnology", an innovative cell and biological manipulation method leveraging the distinctive advantages of acoustic waves as a non-material stimulus.
