Students who are interested in starting band at Kenyon-Wanamingo MS are encouraged to connect with Mrs. Larson at cllarson@kw.k12.mn.us to be placed on an instrument. Once on an instrument, families should plan to secure an instrument in the summer.
The List of Recommended Brands of instruments and ALL supplies needed for beginning band is posted here!
Feel free to bring this to any music shop and they will outfit your child with all the correct supplies.
ALL STUDENTS- should have the following items.
A folding music stand for practice at home
A Traditions of Excellence book 1 for their instrument.
The Beginning Band Bootcamp will be held on Wednesday August 27 from 6:30-8 p.m. Mark your calendars and see you there!
Students who wish to rent an instrument from KWMS/HS must have a rental form on file before an instrument is issued to them.
The rental fee covers routine maintenance of the instrument, not accidents, loss or theft which the student is responsible for. Please print out this form and complete if you with to rent an instrument.
Juniors and Seniors in the KWHS Band now have the opportunity to take HS band for College Credit through SMSU. Registration for this will take place in the first week of school. The curriculum for College Band is essentially the same with several small additional tasks.
To register for College Band, please fill out this survey and you will receive additional information once school starts regarding the curriculum and material additional to the regular class.

The Kenyon-Wanamingo High School band has been invited to perform at the 2025 Minnesota Music Educators Association Winter Convention. The band submitted an application last spring which included several recordings, a tentative program and detailed history of the band and the community. More exciting details will be forthcoming!

Finding Treasure in a Small Rural School District: How the Kenyon-Wanamingo Communities did it Right!

Claire Larson serves as Band Director at Kenyon-Wanamingo MS/HS in Kenyon, Minnesota. Larson earned a Masters of Arts in music education from the University of Minnesota and a Bachelors of Music in music education from St. Olaf College. Her principal teachers were; Miles 'Mity' Johnson, Dr. Timothy Mahr and Dr. Craig Kirchoff. She was the first recipient of the Miles Johnson endowment award in 1994 and received a graduate fellowship in horn performance at the U of M. Larson has both performed and presented at the MMEA midwinter clinic, and has coached the All State horn section. In 2017, Larson was nominated for Minnesota "Teacher of the Year." Larson is serving as the president of the Minnesota Band Directors Association. Prior to her position in the Kenyon-Wanamingo schools, Larson served as visiting professor and director of the Symphony Band at Carleton College, band director at Brooklyn Center MS/HS and Patrick Henry High School in Minneapolis. Larson is a member of Phi Beta Mu. Larson enjoys spending time with her husband John and their three young-adult children Linnea, Anders and Annelise.
