Mountain Biking

About the Program

The Kelseyville High School (KHS) Mountain Bike Team was established in 2011 by Tami and Jeff Kramer and two KHS students.

Cycling and mountain biking is not a recognized as a CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) sport, so the KHS bike team operates as a club sport. The program is available for 8-12 graders to join. Eighth graders may ride/train with the team but cannot compete till 9th grade.

The team is a member of the NorCal High School Cycling League (norcalmtb.org) which operates under its national organization: National Interscholastic Cycling Association or NICA (www.nationalmtb.org). There are currently 25 NICA leagues in 24 different states operating at differing levels of development. California has 2 leagues: NorCal and SoCal. NorCal is divided into 2 divisions: North and South. Kelseyville is part of the Northern NorCal division. There are currently over 70 teams as a whole in NorCal. Kelseyville, along with Clear Lake and Middletown High Schools, compete with about 40 other teams in their division.

The biking practices begin in December with mandatory practices starting after Christmas vacation. Practice is three days a week (Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday or Thursday). Members are required to practice with the team at least two of the three practices a week (or document training on apps like Strava). The team requires a 2.0 GPA average and current year sports physical. All riders qualify and race, meaning no students are cut.

Team coaches have passed back ground checks and are certified in CPR and Wilderness First Aid. Practice locations include Highland Springs/ Old Toll Road, road rides out of Lakeport (primarily Scott's Valley), Six Sigma Ranch and Winery in Lower Lake and Boggs Demonstration Forest on Cobb Mountain.

The team highly encourages trail stewardship as part of its program. They also participate with trail maintenance at Highland Springs and will be participating in the rebuilding of the trails at Boggs Demonstration Forest now that it has re-opened.

The team participates in the NorCal Cycling League's race series (of which the Six Sigma location is one) which start at the end of February. There are 5 races in the series and those who qualify can participate in state championships in May (see the NorCal website for more info). They ask that riders commit to racing in at least three races, but hope they will participate in all five.
