The Future is in the Past

"i ka wā mamua, ka wā mahope" - The Future is in the Past

This short film was conceived, written, produced, and completed in the span of 48 hours as part of the annual 48 Hour Film Challenge sponsored by Hawaiʻi Filmmaker's Collective (HFC).  All media was shot on board Hōkūleʻa, a performance replica of a traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe, during a 2,500 nautical mile journey from Hawaiʻi to Tahiti in 2022.

The story follows Pele, primarily known as the Hawaiian fire goddess, lesser known as the first voyager to travel from Tahiti to Hawaiʻi, many generations ago.  After recounting Pele' s first voyage, her canoe, and crew, we fast forward to witness Pele's descendants making the same voyage on the same sea road, Kealaikahiki, but on a newer canoe, Hōkūleʻa.  Hōkūleʻa's first voyage in 1975 from Hawaiʻi to Tahiti made her the first voyaging canoe to make that trip in 500 years.  From 2014-2017 Hōkūleʻa sailed around the world traveling over 40,000 nautical miles and visiting 150 ports in 18 nations.  Hōkūleʻa currently is in Alaska beginning the Moananuiākea voyage, a five year journey around the Pacific Rim.  Pele's descendant's continue to voyage to this day.
