World Patient Safety Day 2026: Safe Care for Life!
World Patient Safety Day – 17 September 2026
Theme: Safe care for noncommunicable diseases
Slogan: “Safe care for life!”
Introduction
Patient safety is one of the most important principles of high-quality healthcare. Every person who enters a healthcare facility has the right to receive care that is safe, effective, respectful, and free from avoidable harm.
To raise awareness of this global priority, the World Health Organization (WHO) observes World Patient Safety Day every year on 17 September. The day was established in 2019 following the adoption of World Health Assembly Resolution WHA72.6, which recognized patient safety as a global health priority. (World Health Organization)
The fundamental principle behind patient safety is simple: “First, do no harm.”
What is Patient Safety?
Patient safety refers to preventing avoidable harm and reducing unnecessary risks associated with healthcare. Harm can occur at different stages of care, including prevention, diagnosis, medication administration, treatment, surgery, rehabilitation, and long-term follow-up.
According to WHO, approximately 1 in 10 patients is harmed during healthcare, and around half of this harm is considered preventable. This demonstrates that patient safety is not only the responsibility of hospitals or healthcare professionals—it requires action from the entire healthcare system. (World Health Organization)
World Patient Safety Day 2026
The 2026 campaign focuses on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases.
The theme is:
“Safe care for noncommunicable diseases”
and the campaign slogan is:
“Safe care for life!”
NCDs affect billions of people worldwide and account for approximately 74% of deaths globally. Because many people with NCDs require healthcare for years or even throughout their lives, they may have repeated interactions with healthcare systems. Each interaction creates opportunities for both safe care and potential harm. (World Health Organization)
Why is Patient Safety Important in NCD Care?
People living with chronic diseases may experience several patient-safety risks, including:
* Delayed or incorrect diagnosis
* Medication errors and adverse drug events
* Poor communication between healthcare professionals
* Fragmented or poorly coordinated care
* Healthcare-associated infections
* Unsafe use of medical devices
* Lack of patient education and health literacy
* Difficulties accessing appropriate healthcare
* Insufficient involvement of patients in decisions about their care
These risks can become greater when patients have multiple chronic conditions or receive care from different healthcare providers and facilities. (World Health Organization)
The Role of Healthcare Professionals
Healthcare professionals have a central role in creating a culture of safety.
Nurses, in particular, spend significant amounts of time with patients and are often the first professionals to identify changes in a patient’s condition. Nurses contribute to patient safety through accurate assessment, medication administration, infection prevention, effective communication, patient education, documentation, monitoring, and early recognition of deterioration.
Simple actions can make a significant difference, such as:
1. Correctly identifying the patient.
2. Checking medications carefully before administration.
3. Following infection-prevention practices.
4. Communicating clearly with patients and healthcare teams.
5. Documenting care accurately.
6. Reporting safety incidents and near misses.
7. Educating patients about their medications and treatment.
8. Encouraging patients to speak up when they have concerns.
9. Using evidence-based practices.
10. Working as a multidisciplinary team.
Patient safety should not depend on one individual. It should be part of the culture of every healthcare organization.
Patients as Partners in Safety
An important message of World Patient Safety Day 2026 is that people living with NCDs should not simply be viewed as recipients of healthcare. They should be partners in their own safety.
Patients can contribute by asking questions, understanding their medications, communicating their symptoms, reporting unexpected changes, and participating in decisions about their treatment.
WHO emphasizes meaningful engagement of people living with NCDs and communities in identifying safety risks and developing solutions together with healthcare professionals and policymakers. (World Health Organization)
Health literacy is therefore an important component of patient safety. When patients understand their condition and treatment, they are better able to participate in their own care.
Creating a Culture of Safety
A strong patient-safety culture requires healthcare organizations to learn from mistakes rather than simply blaming individuals.
Healthcare workers should feel able to report errors, near misses, and unsafe conditions so that organizations can identify system problems and prevent similar incidents from happening again.
Patient safety also requires:
* Strong leadership
* Adequate staffing and resources
* Continuous education and training
* Effective teamwork
* Evidence-based clinical practice
* Clear communication
* Safe medication systems
* Infection prevention and control
* Patient and family engagement
* Continuous monitoring and improvement
What Can We Do?
Everyone has a role in improving patient safety.
Healthcare professionals can follow safe practices, communicate effectively, report incidents, and continuously improve their knowledge.
Healthcare organizations can develop safety policies, provide training, encourage reporting, and create supportive working environments.
Patients and families can ask questions, share concerns, understand their treatment, and participate actively in healthcare decisions.
Governments and policymakers can strengthen healthcare systems and integrate patient safety into national health policies and programs.
WHO’s 2026 campaign calls for patient safety to be strengthened across the entire continuum of NCD care—from prevention and screening to diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, palliative care, and self-care. (World Health Organization)
Conclusion
World Patient Safety Day is more than an annual awareness event. It is a reminder that every patient deserves safe and respectful care, every time and everywhere.
The 2026 theme, “Safe care for noncommunicable diseases,” reminds us that patient safety must continue throughout a person’s healthcare journey. For people living with chronic diseases, safe care means not only treating the disease but also preventing avoidable harm, improving communication, ensuring medication safety, strengthening health systems, and empowering patients to participate in their own care.
As healthcare professionals and future healthcare leaders, we have a responsibility to make safety part of everything we do.
“Safe care for life!”
Let us work together to create healthcare systems where patients are heard, healthcare workers are supported, mistakes become opportunities for learning, and preventable harm is reduced.
Patient safety is everyone’s responsibility.
