KERALA SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICS
National Mathematics Day Celebration-2025
22nd December 2025
22nd December 2025
Kerala School of Mathematics (KSoM) is proud to announce the celebration of National Mathematics Day on 22nd December 2025, commemorating the birth anniversary of the legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. On this special occasion, KSoM will host the First Dr. M. S. Valiathan Memorial Lecture, an academic initiative instituted in honour of Dr. M. S. Valiathan, the distinguished Indian surgeon, biomedical scientist, and visionary who championed the growth of scientific institutions and interdisciplinary research in India. His contributions remain a source of inspiration for the scientific community, especially in the state of Kerala.
Dr. M. S. Valiathan (1934–2024) was a pioneering Indian cardiac surgeon, the founding director of the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute (Thiruvananthapuram), and a key force behind India’s indigenous TTK-Chitra mechanical heart valve. Trained at Trivandrum Medical College, Liverpool, and later at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown, he combined surgery with biomedical innovation and institution building. He was the first Executive Vice President of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE). He also served as the first Vice-Chancellor of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, became a National Research Professor, and wrote acclaimed works on Ayurveda (The Legacy of Caraka, Suśruta, and Vāgbhaṭa). Honours include the Padma Vibhushan (2005) and leadership of the Indian National Science Academy.
KSoM is honoured to welcome the eminent mathematician Prof. M. S. Raghunathan as the distinguished speaker for the inaugural memorial lecture. Prof. Raghunathan is internationally recognised for his pioneering contributions in the areas of Lie groups, discrete subgroups, and algebraic groups. His path-breaking research and exceptional service to the mathematical community have earned him numerous accolades and a place among India’s most respected mathematicians.
Title of the talk: Mathematics: Art That Would Rather Be Science
The lecture aims to inspire young scholars, researchers, and students by connecting mathematical excellence with historical legacy, innovation, and the spirit of inquiry. The event will bring together academicians, research scholars, and students from across the region to engage in mathematical dialogue, reflection, and celebration.
Abstract: In this talk, Prof. M. S. Raghunathan will highlight the qualities of mathematics that it shares with art, making a case for it to be considered an art. On the other hand, it is often viewed with distaste by people in the arts, and the mathematician is more at ease in a milieu of scientists than in the company of artists.
The programme will also include activities to promote mathematical thinking and appreciation, reaffirming KSoM’s commitment to advancing mathematical sciences through academic engagement, research, outreach, and collaboration.
