During 7th grade we will cover a range of scientific topics. The following are the units of study and a brief description of what students will learn.
Unit 1.) Scientific Process
Goal: Students will understand the thought process so students can conduct their own experiment.
Topics: Parts of the process, Data collection, graphing data, drawing of conclusions, developing procedure for experiments and error analysis.
Unit 2.) Force and Motion
Goal: Students will gather a better awareness of the forces which governor motion in the universe.
Topics: Motion--This includes calculating and applying concept of Speed, acceleration and Newton's three laws of motion.
Force-- Diagram forces on objects, mass vs weight, Universal Law of Gravity .
Unit 3.) Astronomy
Goal: Students will obtain a better understanding of our place in the cosmos.
Topics: Planets, Orbits, gravity, motion of planets, apparent motion of sun, motion of motion, Moon phases, order of the planets and characteristics of the planets
Unit 4.) Energy
Goal: Students will understand the how humans/ objects utilize the energy of the universe.
Topics: Simple Machines--Work, Mechanical Advantage, Simple Machines (levers, incline plane, Pulleys, Screws, Wedge)
Energy--Potential energy, kinetic energy, transformations, Why objects feel hot or cold and future energy sources.
Unit 5.) Weather
Goal; Students will obtain a better awareness of the Earth's weather.
Topics: Atmosphere characteristics, atmospheric heating, atmospheric movement, water cycle, air masses, pressure systems, fronts, clouds, mid-latitude cyclone and forecasting.
