How to setup your lab notebook:

Follow the format below to make sure your lab notebook is setup properly for our class. If you need an example, see mine in our classroom.

***For 2020-2021 -- you will most likely NOT be using a physical lab notebook, as I cannot collect them.

  • Always use pen when writing in your notebook. Write as neat as you can so it is legible.

  • Leave 2 pages blank at the beginning of your notebook to write the Table of Contents.

  • Number all pages at the top corner of each page.

  • Start each experiment on a new right-hand page. You can write on the left-hand side after this page as long as it is apart of the same experiment.

  • Write the title and date of each experiment at the top of the page. The objectives of the experiment should be written underneath.

  • The procedure for each section of the experiment should be written. They should be numbered or bulleted and can be short and concise. Someone should be able to perform your experiment using your procedure.

  • Data (tables, graphs, drawings) should be properly labeled and readable. If you are doing graphs on a graph paper or typing up any data, you will need to tape it into your notebook.

  • If you make a mistake, do not cross / scribble it out! Simply put 1 or 2 lines through the word(s).

  • Calculations (if necessary) should be fully shown and not just an answer.
