Marching Band 2021

Marching Band - Band Camp 2021

Mr. Grimberg

When: August 2-5, 9-12 (M-TH). 8am-3pm.

Where: Kankakee High School Band Room, Football Stadium.

Who:

All Band Students:

-Students are registered for a primary band class during the school day: Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble and then all come together to form the Marching Band (Football games / Parades) and Pep Band (Basketball games) after school.

What:

To prepare for the music and drill:

1) The band typically plays older and modern pop music (Earth Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Adele, Stadium Jams, etc.)

2) We also rehearse football field choreography known as drill. This drill requires a large amount of time to learn, memorize and perfect. Especially if we want it to look good.

**And especially if I put some of the control in the students’ hands

-Field shows are bought with music and drill as a unit, leaving little room for student creativity, and this year I did not buy the drill for our music. Instead, I would love to see some freedom and creativity come from the students as we plan and learn the drill. This is not often done in band programs and requires even more “buy-in” and dedication FROM EVERYONE but will provide high amounts of collaboration and ownership.

Why:

Band Camp is the time to build our foundation for the year.

The Band Program needs a win. We have taken a few hits in the last couple years through director turn over, student retention, COVID, etc. But that is all behind us and it’s time to be something great, to go make a legacy.

We will be focusing heavily on:

1) Community: friendship & ownership: building the program to be a place for every student to feel valued.

2) Growth: as people and musicians we will be better than we were yesterday.

3) Fun: why show up if it isn’t enjoyable! (most things worth doing are hard but fun!)

URGENT

We need everyone to attend band camp if we are going to build community, growth and fun in the program.

Please recognize that all students are an integral part of the program. This is not a class where your progress and success (or lack thereof) only affects you. Instead, we are a unit all pulling together toward the same goal and without everyone, we will not reach our goal.

If there are legitimate conflicts, please email me ASAP. nicholas-grimberg@ksd111.org
