Mathematics 7

Welcome to Mathematics 7

Aloha and welcome to Mathematics 7. This website is intended to assist students in this class to have access to the math content through lessons (video lessons), assignments and other resources that may help all learners have a successful year in math. There are students of varying ability in this course and so this site may allow for all learners to advance and grow in their math skills and abilities at a pace that is personalized to their learning. The goal of this course is to prepare learners for their 8th grade math course and beyond.

Ownership of learning

Most students who own cell phones find great value in owning a phone. They take care of it, they spend a lot of time with it and on a daily basis, they have to charge the battery to keep it working. My hope is that students will do that same with their learning. They will take care of their learning, they will spend a lot of time learning and they will monitor their learning to keep their brain working. It is important for each learner to take responsibility for his/her own learning.

Flexible Learning

Have you ever been in math class and the teacher is teaching a lesson that you already know about and you find yourself bored in math class? Or have you ever been in class and everyone else knows how to do the math and you feel like you are a bit behind in the math skills and need more time to master the concepts? Well, with a flexible learning system that we will have this year, it means that not all students are learning the same lesson at the same time. Students who are able to master skills at a faster rate that others will be able to take assessments and move on to the next unit of learning. Students who need a bit more time to master concepts will have a suggested pace that will help keep their learning on track to be prepared for high school math.

Flipped Model of Teaching

Students can use this website to access video lessons to watch outside of core time in order to allow for more skills practice and application of math concepts and learning in school during class time. As you watch the video, please take notes. After watching the videos, if the concepts are still unclear, students are able to seek further explanation from the kumu in class. Please know that watching the videos prior to coming to class will allow for the most efficient use of class time.

Keys to success in your learning...

1. Prioritize and set goals for yourself.

2. Plan time to get notes completed for each section of the units.

3. Take good notes.

4. Practice, do assignments and try online assessments (phschool quizzes) to show understanding of the math concepts. You can even look up other video lessons (Khan Academy) to learn more about the math concepts.

5. Schedule time to take quizzes and tests with your kumu so that you can move on to the next unit of math.

6. Always work hard to get better at doing math and to learn new things.
