Pilobolus began in 1971 when Moses Pendleton, Jonathan Wolken and Steve Johnson (an English Literature, Philosophy, and Pre-Med student respectively) were chosen to present their class project from a dance composition class a Dartmouth College. After adding to and replacing some members, the group officially became Pilobolus.
Over the next 40 years, Pilobolus has evolved and diversified to include innovative concert dance theater, educational programming and movement services for special clients and events. Based out of Washington Depot, Connecticut, Pilobolus performs for stage and Television audiences worldwide.
Being founded by 3 academics who had not previously studied dance, Pilobolus has a unique view on the choreographic process and how this can inspire ingenuity in other fields. The company teaches its collaborative creative process through The Pilobolus Lab, an educational outreach program using the art of choreography as a model for creative thinking in any field. The institute offers programs for children and adults, dancers and non-dancers, including leadership workshops for corporations and business schools.
The company's credits include Late Night with Conan O'Brien, the 2007 Academy Awards, Oprah Winfrey Show, Sesame Street, CBS's 60 Minutes, the Scotsman Award, a Primetime Emmy Award for lifetime achievement in choreography, and becoming the first collective to be given the Dance Magazine Award. Additionally Pilobolus has performed on Broadway as well as at the Oscars and the Olympics. The company also provides movement design and production for business and advertising through its Pilobolus Creative Services. PCS has made television spots for Mobil, Ford, Toyota, Opel, and Hyundai, and created live events for IBM, Dupont, and Proctor & Gamble among many other companies.
