Pursuing a career in education has taken me half way around the world and back: to Spain, Hungary, and now the United States. My ambition and desire has been tested many times: preparing to move to Spain, then later Hungary was no easy task. However, the hard work didn’t end when my visa arrived in the mail or when the customs officer stamped my entry permit. The most challenging and most exciting part of my journey began when I stepped into my English first classroom at CEIP Federico Garcia Lorca in Spain.
My experiences in Spain and Hungary lead me to realize that I like the creativity and ingenuity teaching offers. For these reasons, I moved back to Michigan to pursue a degree in Education in 2012. I chose Grand Valley State University’s (GVSU) Graduate Teacher Certification (GTC) program because I was able to work on my Master’s in Education as well as earn my teaching certificate.
In addition to earning a teaching certificate from GVSU, I also have a Bachelor of Art's degree in Spanish and Music as well as a minor in English. I am currently working on my Master's in Education in curriculum development from GVSU, 3 credits more!
I believe that Spanish will help teach students the importance of valuing others’ differences, exploring those differences, and reflecting on those differences. I believe that exposing students to differences and teaching them to respect those differences inside of the classroom will translate to students practicing and promoting respect and acceptance outside of the classroom.
I have been teaching Spanish at Kalkaska High School since April of 2014. This school year, 2017/2018, I am teaching Spanish 1, 2, 3, and 4. I am very excited to be taking teaching students a new language and a culture. I am a firm believer in the more people one can communicate and connect with, the easier life will be and the more opportunities one will have throughout life.
In addition to being the Spanish teacher, I am also the Career Tech Center's Teacher Academy mentor teacher for Kalkaska High School.
