Māori and Pakeha had different ideas about owning, lending and borrowing . They did not understand each other's language very well either. This caused serious problems over land.
Men pursuing whales in the late 18th and early 19th century sometimes settled ashore and married into Māori tribes. Whalers were followed by missionaries keen to convert Māori to Christianity.
