PLTW is a S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)curriculum that is available to our K-M students throughout their educational journey (Kindergarten-Grade 12).
In 1st grade your child will attend PLTW 2 days a week for 25 minutes each day!
Project Lead the Way is an exploratory curriculum that empowers students to have a problem solving mindset by working through activities, projects, and problems throughout each of the learning modules. The modules relate to the world around them and provide many hands-on learning experiences. Students also do many learning activities collaboratively with other students. They learn to work together and problem solve as a team.
First Grade Modules
All PLTW Modules are framed around MN Science Standards and use the Engineering Design Process to help guide students through design problems!
Students investigate the properties of light and sound, including vibration from sound waves and the effect of different materials on the path of a beam of light. After students develop an understanding of light and sound, they are challenged to solve a design problem.
Students explore animal adaptations for protection, camouflage, food obtainment, and locomotion. Students learn what it means for an organism to be adapted to its environment and how different adaptations can be categorized. Students are introduced to the design challenge! Applying what they have learned and looking to plant and animal adaptations to guide their designs.
Students investigate how offspring are like their parents. They model animals’ patterns of behavior which help them survive. They learn how plants and animals have external parts that help them meet their needs. With this understanding, students follow the design process to build a model of an outdoor shelter that is inspired by plant and animal external parts.
Students explore how the surface of the Earth is always changing. They are introduced to different types of maps and explore how these maps convey different information about the world in which we live, including where water is found on Earth. Students investigate the different forces that shape the surface of the Earth and design solutions to limit the impact of erosion!
S.T.E.M. TUB EXPLORATION
During PLTW students will experience S.T.E.M. Tubs. S.T.E.M. Tubs are different manipulatives that students will explore to engineer creations with.
S.T.E.M. Tubs inspire kids to be creative, work together problem solve, and guide students to having voice and choice in what they want to use in manipulatives to be engineers!
Kindergarten students LOVE S.T.E.M. Tub exploration time throughout their year in PLTW!
