Hello Everyone!

I, for the most part, grew up in Moorhead, Minnesota.  I was a Spud in high school and a Cobber (Concordia) in college.  I graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1991 and later added a 5-8 Language Arts/Communications licensure.  I married Cheryl and moved to Rochester in 1995.  After teaching in Rochester for 5 years, I came to K-M in 2000.  I started an alternative school for middle school kids and later moved into a 5th-grade classroom teacher position.  I moved to a 6th-grade English teaching position in 2016.  I'm a former head coach of the varsity girls' soccer team at K-M (22 years) and an assistant varsity softball coach (12 years).

On a personal note, I have twin daughters, Hannah and Molly who both graduated from Mayo High School in 2021.  Molly is taking classes at RCTC and helping us take care of her sister.  Hannah is home with us.  She needs 24-hour medical care, but is doing well and enjoys music, television, art, reading, and horseback riding.  My wife, Cheryl, works in a lab at Mayo Clinic.  She enjoys reading and modifying our home to fit our ever-changing needs.  I enjoy time with family, reading, Minnesota sports teams, and the outdoors in Minnesota (Yes, even the winters).  I still play in a softball league and try to play soccer, basketball, and golf whenever I can.

I teach because I enjoy working with students and living in the constant energy of kids.  Every day is different and brings new challenges.  Reading was a struggle for me in school and now it has become a passion.  I had a 9th-grade teacher that turned me on to reading and I haven't looked back!  Reading is so important and the middle school years are key to either keeping kids motivated to read or being that teacher that turned reading on for those reluctant readers.  My goal is to surround kids with good books and give them opportunities to find what they enjoy.

I look forward to another exciting year with a whole new group of students and families.  Please don't hesitate to contact me anytime. c.soderberg@komets.k12.mn.us
