Mr. Sarmad Latif is a senior researcher in the Civil Engineering Department at Komar University of Science and Technology in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. He holds a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on water security, and a first-class Bachelor’s degree, both from the National Energy University in Malaysia. He has teaching experience in the courses of Water Resources, Environmental Management, Climate Science, Climate Change & Society, Climate Modelling, and Artificial Intelligence. He has authored over 50 scientific articles and two books, and has extensively served as a peer-reviewer for numerous research papers in leading international journals. He serves as Editor for Discover Sustainability, a Springer Nature journal indexed by Web of Science (Clarivate) and Scopus with Impact Factor of 3.0. He also serves as Topic Associate Editor in World Water Policy, a Wiley journal indexed by Scopus with a CiteScore of 2.0. He was ranked the top researcher in Iraq in 2023 (Scopus) for studies on water security. In 2025, he was recognized as one of the world’s most influential scientists by Stanford University and Elsevier, being included in their list of the top 2% based on scientific impact. His work supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and his current research focuses on water security, artificial intelligence in engineering, and sustainable water resources and environmental management. He has played a leading role in shaping and implementing several water policy and management projects in collaboration with governmental agencies and private institutions.
