Kohler High School
National Honor Society Membership Policy
The Kohler High School chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of the national organization.
Membership is based upon the four nationally recognized criteria: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Candidates are selected by a five-member faculty council appointed by the principal. Selection is determined by majority vote.
This honor is conferred each Fall semester on behalf of the faculty of Kohler High School.
Membership in NHS is considered both an honor and a responsibility.
Inducted members are expected to:
Maintain the high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Remain actively engaged in the work and activities of the chapter.
The ongoing fulfillment of these expectations is essential for the chapter’s effectiveness and integrity.
Membership is open to students in grades 11 and 12.
Candidates must have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Meeting this criterion satisfies the scholarship standard for NHS.
At the beginning of each school year, students who meet the scholarship criterion will be invited to submit a Candidate Application Form. This form must provide evidence of leadership and service.
In order to demonstrate character, two Character Reference Forms need to be submitted with the application. One reference form should be completed by a Kohler School District staff member and the other reference form should be from someone outside of the district (not a family member).
The faculty council considers the following sources of evidence in its deliberations:
School disciplinary records, reviewed for any conduct concerns.
Faculty evaluations, whereby high school staff on the faculty council may provide professional reflections regarding the candidate’s character and leadership.
Written reflection, submitted by the candidate on the application, describing personal leadership experiences.
Written reflection, submitted by the candidate on the application, describing service experiences.
A majority vote of the faculty council is required for final selection.
Candidates will be notified of their selection or non-selection in accordance with a predetermined schedule.
Students selected for membership will be recognized at a formal induction ceremony held at Kohler High School.
Following induction, members are required to maintain the standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character on which their selection was based.
All application materials (see below) must be submitted by the published deadlines. Refer to the Application Timeline page for this year's deadlines and other important dates.
