As we conclude the 2025 Christmas season and move forward together, we would like to sincerely thank all brothers who took part in our Koliada and men’s Nativity performances throughout the Christmas period. These activities were a strong witness of our faith and brotherhood.
We would also like to highlight the Ukrainian Christmas Carols Festival, held in January at the ABVM Ukrainian Catholic Church, as well as our final men’s Nativity performance, held at St. Stephen’s Church, which beautifully concluded our Christmas celebrations.
Performance at St Vladimir in Red Deer
Performance at The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Performance at St Stephen Protomartyr

One of the many benefits available from the Knights of Columbus are education scholarships. These scholarships are available from the Supreme Council and the AB/NWT State Council to K of C members with children going into post-secondary studies. Brother Glen Kulak’s son Luke was presented with a $500.00 scholarship from State Council on December 14, 2025. Best of luck to Luke on his future studies.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
November 29, 2025
Saturday November 29th, 2026 marked a momentous day for St Nicholas Byzantine Council 7659 in Calgary, Alberta. It is a unique council comprising two Ukrainian Catholic Churches, St Stephen Protomartyr and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. An exemplification was held welcoming 25 new members which also included one priest. What was most unusual is that the entire exemplification was held in the Ukrainian language. All of the new members are recent arrivals and evacuees from Ukraine. Some who have limited English language capabilities. An official copy of the wording for the Exemplification was provided by Brother Knights in Ukraine. We do not know of another exemplification / degree in recent memory that was held for new arrivals to Canada in their own native language.
Also in attendance were Bishop David Motiuk (past State Chaplain), who filled the role of Chaplain on the team, State Deputy Dave Wilson, Co-Chaplain Fr Roman Planchak, Grand Knight Andrii Pavliv as well as many other council members.
At the conclusion the council hosted an appetizer banquet and refreshments with more than 100 family members in attendance.

Brother Knights around the world helping those is need! The sister parishes of St Stephen Protomartyr and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located in Calgary, Alberta raised funds to distribute to orphaned and under privileged children in war torn Ukraine. As the cost to send parcels is prohibitive, the members of St Nicholas Council 7659 stepped up to help. In late November 2025, the $11,000.00 raised was wire transferred to the Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation in Kiev. As a registered charity the KofC Foundation receives a 20 percent discount on purchases there-by increasing the purchasing power locally.
Working with the congregation of the Sister Servants of Mary Immaculate, members of the Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation determined what their needs were. Purchased locally in Kiev, the parcels were shipped to Knights of Columbus councils near 5 separate convents in areas that were in greatest need. From those locations the gifts were distributed by the Sisters and local KofC members.
Fr McGivney’s vision was to support the widows and orphans. Working across the ocean that is exactly what was accomplished by Brother Knights here and abroad in Ukraine.

A Huge thank you is extended to all parishoners for their generous contributions to the Veterans Food Bank collection. Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus we provided in excess of 400 lbs to the Veteran's Food bank. They were extremely thankful as contributions this year are down by nearly 40 percent.
