Engineering Design Process

The Knowles Engineering Group sees engineering design as a process with four major phases. Click the link to explore each phase in more detail.

These phases are inter-related, iterative, and often cyclical. As an engineer progresses from a problem to a solution, the number of possible solutions generally expands at first and then narrows as potential solutions are chosen and refined.

The diagram below shows the goals for each phase and actions an engineer/student is likely to perform to achieve those goals.  For more detail on each phase (including connections to NGSS) click here. Explore the Tools for Teachers to view activities and resources for supporting students engineering in math and science.
