Basic Ping Pong Scoring
11 points per game
Determine who will serve first. For our purposes, use a third party. (Ex. Third person holds the ping pong in her/his hand behind their back and the person to guess correctly gets the first serve).
Each player gets to serve for two points in a row and then the serve transfers to the other player.
The server will hit the ball so it touches your side of the table one and then bounces over the net.
A serve that touches the net (a let serve) must be done again. No points are scored. There is no limit to the “let serve”
Returning Serves - Instruction (As shared on Monday):
Tips:
1. Keep your knees soft to allow for easy, quick movement
2. Notice differences in how you hold your paddle - experiment a bit.
Topspin:
a. keep paddle facing downward b. swing through the ball from low to high (Topspin = Low to High)
Backspin :
a. face paddle upwards b. swing through the ball high to low (Backspin = High to Low Swing)
Try both the topspin and backspin with a forehand and a backhand.
Step by step - How to Serve:
a. Toss the ball up
b. Hit the ball allowing for a bounce on your side of the table first and then the opponents side.
c. Try topspin serve (low to high)
d. Try backspin serve (high to low)
3. Eyes should follow the ball at all times when engaged in play
Solutions for common beginner mistakes:
(You may review a helpful video below)
Tips:
1. Hold the paddle comfortably, flexible wrist and flexible grip.
2. Stand comfortably away from the ping pong table, give yourself space. (suggested: 2 ft away)
3. Stand square to the table. Avoid turning your body in one direction or the other. Avoid placing your right foot well in front of the other. Be prepared to hit using backhand or forehand, equally positioning yourself to handle either.
4. Avoid big follow through - it's not necessary. You must be able to respond quickly to a return shot. Use your energy to make a good shot, no more, no less.
5. Move to the ball instead of reaching for the ball. "Jump to it rather than reaching" for a quality shot.
