COMPETITION GUIDELINES

ONLINE PARTICIPATION

(RECORDED VIRTUAL PRESENTATION)

Be part of IIEF's definitive inventions and innovations exhibition to propel your ideas further.

IIEF 2024 is open to all LOCAL and INTERNATIONAL students, teachers/lecturers, and staff from Primary/Secondary/College/Higher Educational Institutions. The competition is conducted in HYBRID MODE for external participants. Payment for the fee (if applicable) must be made before the registration deadline and proof of payment must be uploaded together in the registration form.

GUIDELINES FOR ONLINE PARTICIPATION

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Online participants are required to upload the following materials through unique folder link to be emailed by the organiser:

Project Abstract
A YouTube link for the product presentation Video with a duration of 5 to 8 minutes (The link must be inserted to the Powerpoint slide cover provided)
Presentation Slides (in PPT format) with the following cover (please click download to edit - Click File, Download as Ms PowerPoint):

All participants will receive an Award Certificate by mail. Medals for the Winners will be given after the completion of the event.
Maximum Number of Members: 6 members including 1 supervisor (max 6)
Registration with proof of payment and submission of abstract must be made by 12 January 2024 (please scan the QR code to register)

ELEMENTS OF PRESENTATION

All online participants need to upload a softcopy of the project abstract, Power Point presentation slides, and YouTube link of the presentation video to the organizer via the e-mailed folder link by 8 February 2024.
Prototype(s) or Product of the innovation is required and is advised to be shown in the presentation video (for online participants).

SAMPLE ABSTRACT

"Insect Repellent Potential of Peppermint Essential Oil."

The peppermint plant, also known as Mentha balsamea Wild, is a hybrid mint, a cross between watermint and spearmint. One of the popular uses for peppermint—aside from its use as a dietary supplement or health application—is its potential to repel insects. This study focuses on the development of insect repellent using peppermint oil. 25 grams of fresh peppermint was collected, crushed and placed in a glass jar. The jar was then filled with olive oil, and the oil was allowed to steep in a warm location for two days. After two days, the oil was strained using a folded cheesecloth. The extracted oil was gathered and diluted 70% in three separate containers to be transferred into spray bottles. Testing involved spraying the sample into a glass jar with Anopheles juidthae (common mosquitoes) and compared with the effect of a commercial insect repellant. This study challenges the belief that synthetic insect repellents are more effective than all-natural, essential oil options.

Registration form must be submitted before 12 JANUARY 2024 (with payment for local college/institute of higher learning and international schools/college/institute of higher learning).
