Welcome to University of Kelaniya!

The University of Kelaniya is one of Sri Lanka’s largest state universities. It claims its origin from the historic Vidyalankara Pirivena, a national center of traditional learning that was established in 1875. With the creation of modern universities in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon), the Pirivena became the Vidyalankara University of Ceylon in 1959, the Vidyalankara Campus of the University of Sri Lanka in 1972, and finally the University of Kelaniya in 1978. Situated in close proximity to the capital city of Colombo, the University of Kelaniya has seven Faculties and 57 academic departments. The Faculties of Commerce & Management Studies, Graduate Studies, Humanities, Science, and Social Sciences are situated in the Kelaniya premises, while the Faculty of Computing & Technology is situated in Bulugaha Junction, Kelaniya, and the Faculty of Medicine is in Ragama. The University has two affiliated institutions: the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology and the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies. The University has approximately 14,500 full-time undergraduates and 3,500 postgraduate students enrolled in a wide range of programmes of study: 89 undergraduate degree programs, 61 postgraduate programs, and 68 programs leading to Certificates, Advanced Certificates, Diplomas, and Higher Diplomas. These students have access to a variety of different student support services, inclusive of residential and sports facilities, as well as an excellent IT infrastructure that supports online learning. The academic staff engage in high-quality research that has enabled the University to enter the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 (1501+ category). The University strongly promotes sustainable practices, with an Environment Policy that emphasizes caring for the Environment. The University of Kelaniya was ranked 1st among Sri Lankan universities in the UI Green Metrics University Rankings, and 3rd among the Sri Lankan universities in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2023.

Pediatric Liver Transplantation in Sri Lanka

A study led by Dr. Meranthi Fernando at the University of Kelaniya focused on pediatric liver transplantation in Sri Lanka. Liver diseases are common among children, and liver transplantation is the definitive treatment for medically intractable liver conditions. The world's first pediatric liver transplant occurred approximately 60 years ago, and it was not until 2020 that a successful pediatric liver transplant was performed in Sri Lanka. The establishment of a pediatric liver transplant program in a low-income country with free healthcare, such as Sri Lanka, has faced significant challenges and obstacles.

Efficiency boost of inverted polymer solar cells using electrodeposited n-type Cu₂O ESTLs

A team from the University of Kelaniya, led by Prof. R. P. Wijesundera, conducted research aimed at enhancing the efficiency of inverted polymer solar cells through the use of electrodeposited n-type Cu₂O electron-selective transport layers (ESTLs). In this study, n-Cu₂O ESTLs were integrated into the inverted device structure SS/n-Cu₂O/P3HT:PCBM/PEDOT:PSS/Au. However, the inclusion of n-Cu₂O ESTLs led to a decrease in solar cell performance, possibly due to increased internal resistance. Devices with n-Cu₂O ESTLs annealed at 175⁰C showed an increase in power conversion efficiency (PEC) from 0.08 to 0.35%. This enhancement is likely due to an improved photoresponse and short-circuit current density (Jsc). The photoresponse spectrum saw significant improvement with n-Cu₂O ESTLs, attributed to better electron transferability. Pre-annealing of n-Cu₂O ESTLs may have optimized the crystallinity, grain boundary, and defect conditions, resulting in the Jsc increase.
