The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provide a comprehensive roadmap for global peace and prosperity. These 17 goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030. The SDGs emphasize the interconnectedness of economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.
Sustainable Development Goal 8 aims to promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. It recognizes that sustained economic growth must be inclusive to provide opportunities for all and reduce inequalities.
Two key targets under this goal are particularly relevant to our CPI project:
Sustain per capita economic growth in accordance with national circumstances and, in particular, at least 7% gross domestic product growth per annum in the least developed countries.
Target 8.1 emphasizes the importance of consistent economic growth as a foundation for development. Monitoring the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is critical to assessing economic stability, as high inflation can erode real income, reduce consumer confidence, and hinder economic expansion.
Improve progressively, through 2030, global resource efficiency in consumption and production and endeavor to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation, in accordance with the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production, with developed countries taking the lead.
CPI analysis helps identify sectors where resource inefficiency or unsustainable consumption is driving price increases. Understanding these patterns supports policies that promote sustainable consumption and production, ultimately decoupling economic growth from environmental harm.
The motivation behind this project is to analyze the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to uncover trends in inflation and consumer behavior, and to assess their broader implications on sustainable economic development.
Our analysis seeks to:
Monitor inflation trends across essential sectors like food, housing, and energy
Evaluate which categories show the greatest price volatility
Understand the socio-economic impact of rising living costs
Link consumption trends to resource use and sustainability
This work directly contributes to:
Target 8.1, by identifying inflationary pressures that may impact growth
Target 8.4, by assessing how price shifts influence resource-efficient consumption
By integrating exploratory data analysis with sustainable development objectives, this project provides valuable insights that support policy recommendations for inclusive, resilient, and environmentally conscious economic strategies.
