Principles of Human Services is a Family and Consumer Sciences based course that focuses on a broad range of topics in FCS. Students are encouraged to explore subjects such as personality studies, professionalism and business ethics, and entrepreneurship. Many students find that during our studies of various types of occupations they find new and exciting careers in technology that they were not otherwise aware of. Our entrepreneurship project spans the second nine weeks and is based solely on student interest- many students began businesses in photography, culinary arts, physical fitness, or retail clothing. Students will also be exposed to focused careers, and learn necessary skills, in nutrition and culinary arts, fashion and interior design, and child development. PHS includes basic life skills such as budgeting and money management, goal setting, and conflict resolution.
Recommendations on participation in PHS: PHS is a high school credit class, and as such will include a semester exam. Student wishing to complete the high school credit should be willing to initiate and pace their own projects, and should be comfortable with self direction. PHS uses project based learning, and therefore, students who are interested should be willing to create and present products to show mastery of skills learned in class. PHS is technology based as it is a CTE (Career and Technology) course, so basic computer skills are recommended.
