We have seven units that we cover in 8th grade English Language Arts: Fiction, Expository, Poetry, Historical Fiction, Persuasive, Drama, and Mythology. Research will be integrated through every unit. A typical week in an ELA classroom would involve a few days of mini-lessons and practice, followed by a few days of independent leveling up through choice boards. Students will have various writing pieces - essays, scripts, poetry portfolios, and imaginative stories - to work on throughout the year. On level ELA will have more teacher guidance and modeling. Students will have specific choices to work with. PreAP ELA will cover more advanced and mature topics. As a class the work will be more independently guided and facilitated by the teacher. Students can have more freedom to choose the way in which they want to demonstrate the material they are learning.
